California Volunteers, Office of the Governor reposted this
It's officially the Year of the Neighborhood in City of Nevada City! Last week, Mayor Gary Petersen issued a proclamation for the Year of the Neighborhood. Proclamations like this highlight the important work that California cities, counties, and special districts are doing to strengthen neighborhood social connection and community resilience. This work can help Californians prepare for disasters like wildfires and address the epidemic of loneliness because these are things that rely on the connectedness of our communities. I'm excited about this from Nevada City because this city is a historical treasure, has one of the oldest populations in the nation, and, surrounded by forest in the Sierras, is one of the regions most threatened by fire in our state and nation. As Mayor Petersen shared, "When we know our neighbors, when we look out for one another, we create a safety net that is invaluable in times of crisis… Let us pledge to know our neighbors, or know them even better, let's look out for one another and work together to prevent fires and ensure the safety of our community, and let us do this work with pride, inclusivity, civility, generosity, and love. Let's do it as human beings, together. We are stronger together and we can make our town a model of fire safety and community that will serve us all for decades to come." Thank you to Mayor Petersen and the City of Nevada City Council, Evan McLenithan, Camille Oneto and the Firewise communities on your leadership on this and taking this important step towards disaster preparedness and mental health. #Meet6Neighbors #ItTakesaNeighborhood #NeighbortoNeighbor #socialconnection California Volunteers, Office of the Governor Sunshine Swinford
