Increasing access & equal opportunity for people with disabilities by through Independent Living Centers in California.
About us
California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC) started as a peer support mechanism for executive directors of the fledgling Independent Living Centers in California (ILC) in 1976. Originally the directors were the usual representatives who went to Sacramento to educate public policy makers on issues affecting persons with disabilities. Today, we serve all of the Independent Living Centers in California in different capacities, whether it's through our Disability Organizing Network or the assistive technology program, Ability Tools.

Yesterday, CFILC, advocates from Disability Resources Agency for Independent Living-DRAIL and allied organizations visited the California State Capital to speak at the Senate Subcommittee on Health and Human Services in response to massive cuts proposed in the Governor's May Revise of the State budget. Advocates spoke against cuts to programs critical for older adults and people with disabilities, including In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), CalFresh| CA|COUNTY |Housing Assistance Programs and funding for housing programs for older adults and people with disabilities. IHSS is an especially critical program, providing attendant/caregiver support for low income individuals, allowing them the ability to live in community, instead of being forced into institutionalization. These programs are critical, and CFILC remains committed to holding our government accountable to its commitment to building a California For All — a California that remains committed to supporting the independence of older adults and people with disabilities.

California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC) reposted this
Disability Rights California is thrilled to announce that Governor Newsom has signed AB 545 (Pellerin) into law. This legislation brings improvements to voting accessibility, with a particular focus on curbside voting, taking an important step towards ensuring that all Californians have the opportunity to participate equally in our democracy. Key provisions of AB 545 include mandatory curbside voting, readily available handheld magnifiers, and signature guides at all voting locations across the state. These measures are designed to remove barriers that voters with disabilities often face when exercising their right to vote. Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/eg3TKmZR

33 years ago on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. This historic civil rights law protects the rights of people with disabilities. Whether it's having an office building accessible to enter or changing office work to be more flexible, the ADA has made sure we are heard for changes in the workplace, the classroom and overall society. How has the ADA helped you over these years since it was created in 1990? Comment below! #ThanksToTheADA #ADA33 #ADANetwork #DisabilityPride Image Description: A white flier with a logo in the center reads, “ADA 33 (1990-2023) Americans with Disabilities Act. Celebrate the ADA! July 26, 2023.” On the left and right sides of the flier are curved dotted red designs. A picture of a person using a wheelchair is traveling on an access ramp where three other people are standing at the top of the ramp. In the bottom left corner is a half blue circle with the CFILC logo inside of it.
