Today marks a significant step towards equity in Massachusetts - thank you to our House and Senate for voting to pass The Frances Perkins Workplace Equity Act, sending the bill now to Governor Healey! By mandating salary transparency, we will move closer to eliminating racial and gender wage gaps in our pursuit of vital, prosperous and equitable communities. Thank you to Senate President Karen Spilka, House Speaker Ron Mariano, the conference committee, former Lt. Gov. Evelyn Murphy, Megan Driscoll, and everyone who played a role in passing this legislation along with the entire #WageEquityNow Coalition for their steadfast partnership! "The Frances Perkins Workplace Equity Act — named after the first woman to serve as US labor secretary — would require employers with 25 full-time employees or more to disclose salary ranges in their job postings and protect an employee’s right to ask for salary ranges in the workplace. Requiring employers to list a pay range on job postings — say from $80,000 to $100,000 for a project manager — can reduce inequities because women and people of color tend to underestimate their asking salaries, according to advocates who have studied the issue." Nationally, Black women working full time make only 69¢ for every dollar a white man makes. According to BWWC's 2023 Gender and Racial Wage Gap data, Black women in Greater Boston earn just 48¢ for every dollar white men earn. This pay gap goes beyond income: today it affects Black women's access to healthcare, education, and housing among other things, consequently impacting their ability to accumulate wealth in the future.
