How are communities in Fiji building climate resilience by weaving tradition with #Conservation practices? 🌱 Macuata Province in the north of Fiji is home to the Cakaulevu – the Great Sea Reef — with its thriving diversity of marine life. Whilst faced with a variety of threats including climate change and overfishing, local communities in Kavewa are working together to build the resilience of their community and the ecosystem they rely on. In a recent article, WWF Asia-Pacific explores: 🌎 The sacred tabu, a temporary closure of fishing grounds historically set to commemorate 100 days of a chief’s death, acting as an effective tool to sustainably manage natural resources. 🌎 Siga Damu, a social enterprise focused on sustainable farmed sea cucumber harvesting which prioritizes inclusive community decision-making and benefits and distributes income equitably to its shareholders. “We are very close to our environment and we fully depend on the resources,” - Emosi Time, a resident of Kavewa Island. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/evjTCBNP

How can the private sector step up to help the world respond to climate, social and economic crises? 🌱 The action needed to decarbonize our economy and adapt to a rapidly changing climate is almost beyond comprehension, with estimates suggesting that trillions of dollars will be needed for both decarbonization and adaptation. In a recent article for Forum for the Future, Dr Sally Uren writes on six key features that can unlock the private sector's potential for climate mitigation and adaption: 🌎 Enabling access to finance, both seed finance and for scaling. 🌎 Leveraging its complex supply chains, which often span the globe. 🌎 Harnessing the power of consumer brands, to engage people, build awareness and seed advice for climate adaptation. 🌎 Innovating, such as developing technology that gives farmers access to early weather warnings to exploring infrastructure that withstands extreme weather, businesses are getting creative. 🌎 Smartly use its data, considering how this can be analyzed to inform climate adaptation. 🌎 Partnering for impact, bringing together the diverse perspectives, expertise and experiences needed to co-create solutions capable of tackling multiple problems at once. “We have a timebound window to be our best, and the challenges of 2024 demand a different purpose for all of us. That in turn means a different purpose for business.” - Dr Sally Uren, Chief Executive Officer at Forum for the Future 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dX3dUcNA

How can the water utilities and services sector play its part in halting and reversing #NatureLoss by 2030? 💧 The sector is critical to securing the availability and sustainability of water and sanitation for all. However, the sector’s impacts and dependencies on nature in providing this public service are increasing. That’s why it’s crucial that the water utilities and services companies direct their efforts towards addressing the most significant impacts on nature in their operations and value chains, namely: 🌎 Freshwater use 🌎 Pollution 🌎 Land and water use change and degradation 🌎 Greenhouse gas emissions To support this transition, we have produced clear sector-specific guidance, in collaboration with Accenture UK & Ireland, that businesses should take now to ensure the water utilities and services sector plays its role in halting and reversing nature loss by 2030. 🔗 Read more: https://bit.ly/45zKLmh
