The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy (BOPC), is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, independent, community organization that promotes, preserves, restores, enhances and ensures maintenance of Olmsted Parks and Parkways in the greater Buffalo area to guarantee Olmsted park experiences for current and future generations. The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is the first nonprofit organization in the nation to manage and operate an entire historic urban park system that consists of 850 acres of beautifully designed parks, parkways and circles. More than 1 million people use Buffalo’s historic, award-winning Olmsted Park System annually for recreation, relaxation and rejuvenation. Buffalo’s Olmsted System includes the popular urban green spaces: Cazenovia Park, Delaware Park, Front Park, Martin Luther King, Jr., Park, Riverside Park and South Park as well as their adjoining parkways and circles which weave throughout the city of Buffalo. The parks were designed by America’s first landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted nearly 150 years ago. Olmsted designed parks in nearly every major city in the country. However, his work in Buffalo – the first park and parkway system designed and built in the U.S. – is considered his very best. Since the 2004 agreement with the City of Buffalo and Erie County, the Olmsted Parks Conservancy has retained full responsibility for the management and maintenance of these green spaces. Park maintenance including turf care, litter pickup and trash removal, graffiti clean-up, tree, shrub and flower plantings and pruning are managed year round by Olmsted staff and volunteers. In 2008, the Conservancy adopted the Plan for the 21st Century, the blueprint necessary to restore the parks to Olmsted’s original vision while expanding and completing the system as originally conceived, a “city within a park.” In 2019, a Five Year Plan update for 2020-2024 was published. I had the honor of co-presenting at the American Public Gardens Association Annual Conference "Pushing Boundaries in Plant Records and Curation: Embracing technology while holding true to tradition". Technological interventions are helping to tell the story of this tremendous, historic Olmsted landscape while supporting the 11-phase restoration process. Grateful to be working with Christopher Gabris, GISP and the Blue Raster team in conjunction with mike oneal with BG-BASE, Inc. on the coordination and launch of the Plant Finder application, allowing Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy to share our South Park Arboretum plant collection with the public. One of the ways that Papercraft miracles operates in a sustainable way is by creating paper and other products using waste materials from other companies and organizations. Recently, we partnered with Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy to create paper using invasive plants they were removing from the parks. We are really excited to share this video of the process and to be teaching a Papermaking workshop at Martin Luther King Park this coming Sunday, July 21 from 10 AM until the paper pulp runs out. Yesterday for the YPOP panel, there were guests from different non-profits around WNY with Grassroots Gardens WNY, Colored Girls Bike Too, Parent Network of WNY & Arts Services Inc. (ASI)/ El Museo. They spoke about fundraising, burnout and why they love the work that you do. A big take away was for people to really establish their "Why," in the nonprofit sector, as we understand there will be challenging days, so to balance that with why you are passionate about it. It was fantastic to learn about these different programs, thank you Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy for putting this together.
Park spaces such as the Rose Garden in Delaware Park are being cared thanks to passionate staff and volunteers! Over the past few weeks and into the summer, volunteers from the WNY Rose Society have been showing up consistently every Monday to support our operations crew with maintaining the Rose Garden. We say goodbye to the goats today (June 29) at Cazenovia Park! Special thanks to Jen and Julia from Let's Goat Buffalo for partnering with us on this invasive species removal project with the help of their beautiful herd 🐐 2nd photo - Kristie Munson, Workforce Development and Education Manager, led an Invasive Species Walk and Talk tour this morning to a group of troopers who braved the rain! Across two weeks, the goats worked their magic and transformed the view shed of Caz Creek (final photo for an example). We are grateful to every staff member who made this possible, to National Fuel Gas Company for underwriting goat security and to Moog Inc. for making Invasive Species Month in 2024 possible.
