Multi-hyphenate here. I was told recently to "pick a lane" by someone who looks like me. I managed to frustrate them by not knowing the correct jargon to use while sharing an idea. When served as you-asked-for-it humble pie coupled with 'I went through things, too, and you don't see me crying about it', many survivors of DV have to swallow incredibly harmful narratives. It doesn't just matter this month, it matters every month. If I could have picked a lane: 🏃🏾♂️ I'd have picked one where, as a child, I didn't have to be in alert mode with caretakers who were unable or unwilling to get a hold of their stress response, which, over time, results in our nervous systems being worn thin. 🏃🏾♂️ I'd have picked a lane where there was access to helpful and safe interventions, support, and community that served as immediate protection. 🏃🏾♂️ I'd have picked a lane where I was bigger and physically strong enough to protect my sadly estranged late sibling while she was mercilessly brutalized by a law enforcement official and then-caretaker. 🏃🏾♂️ I'd have picked a lane where I wasn't so worn out that I was bullied out of college, accused as 'thinking I was better,' and an easy target thanks to complicated baggage and wounds that weighed me down. 🏃🏾♂️ I'd have picked a lane where my mind, body, and curiosity were fully nurtured, rather than being a threat to caretakers knee-deep in their own unresolved trauma. For many survivors of life-changing violence, the lane picks us. We do what we can with what we have, whether or not we appear to be 'fine' or have struggles that aren't visible to the naked eye. With no choice but to bootstrap despite intersectional challenges, we may take on many professions to learn, to survive, to patch together a chance to live our dreams. There should be no shame in that. No punishment. No taboo. 🎥 As a spoiler alert: I joined with Deirra S. for an episode of The Deirra Show airing this Friday on BronxNet Community Television and we didn't pick a lane. We simply centered the audience and had a meaningful discussion because we cared and we saw the value in each other and community. It's not easy work, but it's vital to our health. I commend independent and established media professionals who are curious about ways a trauma-informed lens can transform the workplace and approach to ways we connect with harmed communities and meaningful relationship building, in general. The more we learn about developing a trauma-informed lens rather than defending inaccurate assumptions without asking clarifying questions, the more we're potentially able to use our energy to solve real problems that plague our world together. It's important not to make that a crime. I'll drop links and additional information in the comment thread below. #linkincomments

Presence is important. Shoutout mom for always being present growing up. The same goes for #Linkedin - if you don't post then you're out of sight and therefore out of mind. Out of mind when it comes to referrals, job opportunities, and internship application deadlines. Here are some of my favorite accounts that I'm connected with that are using the LinkedIn platform correctly by: 1) Sharing their authentic stories 2) Creating intentional engagement with their connections/followers 3) Keeping it professional while not losing who they are Most importantly they all post consistently which keeps them in the top of mind for those in their feed and even me when making this post 🫡 Connect & follow ⬇️⬇️ Felix Paulino Morgan Antonazzo Kamina S.
