About us

Bridges to Prosperity envisions a world where poverty caused by rural isolation no longer exists. Rural isolation is a root cause of poverty, and we believe that connection is the foundation to opportunity. We work with local communities, partners, governments, private sector, and institutions to build trail bridges that connect residents to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. With a sophisticated data collection and evaluation program, we can prove that the value and impact of our work is sustained long after the opening celebration.

We celebrated the completion of the Cyamatare bridge, a symbol of dedication from the Buro Happold team, the Cyamatare and Karambo communities, and B2P. Every task was carried out with determination and enthusiasm, resulting in a vital lifeline for the community. This achievement is a testament to our collective effort and the power of collaboration. Local chefs prepared a delicious BBQ, and the team enjoyed celebrating with the communities. Thanks to our partner, Buro Happold, for continuing to believe in our mission, and congratulations to them for their first time sponsoring the construction of an entire bridge!

We are proud to collaborate with the government of Ethiopia on the Transformative Rural Access for Improved Livelihood (TRAIL) project, which has brought a 120-meter suspended trail bridge to the community's 12,000 residents. We're committed to deploying ready-to-sell, tech-driven solutions that can be rapidly implemented to transform lives. This new chapter for Gendawuha is a testament to the power of resilient infrastructure and our dedication to improving rural access globally.

How much would you pay to reach healthcare, markets and schools? In Gendawuha town in Ethiopia's Amhara region, the going rate is 100 birr ($1.75) to hang on a hand-pulled timber cart tied to a cable wire. The cost is per person, each way. 🛵 The cost to have a motorbike carried across the river's swift currents is 300 birr ($5.25) – which is equal to the average daily wage rate for local residents. 🌊 The Gendawuha river is nearly impassable during the heavy rainy season from June to September, leaving local residents with limited – and expensive – options to reach the essentials. 🌉 But now there's a safe, reliable option for the town's 12,000 residents: A 120-meter suspended trail bridge stretches across the river. "This starts a new chapter in the life of local people," says Infrastructure Development Officer Sewnet Assegu. "The fear of parents for students going to school safely, their frustration when they see a heavy cloud in the sky, and the harrowing experience of hanging on a single cable lifeline – this has now passed in the shadow of time." The Transformative Rural Access for Improved Livelihood (TRAIL) project is a collaboration with the government of #Ethiopia and Bridges to Prosperity. A group of local engineers and Helvetas' Ethiopia team recently trekked two miles over a steep, rocky mountain to access a trail bridge construction site in the Oromia region — an arduous trek, made more so by heavy rains.   In a new blog, Oromia project manager Hunde Tamene Diribsa reflects on the journey, the community's heartwarming efforts to keep the group safe, and the 3️⃣ lessons he's learned through the project so far:   ✨ Be persistent and seize opportunities as they arise 🤝 Social media can serve as a connector 🌉 Institutionalizing trail bridges drives lasting progress   The Transformative Rural Access for Improved Livelihood (TRAIL) project is a collaboration with the government of #Ethiopia and Bridges to Prosperity.   TSEHAY TSEGAYEMeron Wubishet MekonnenNigussu TeferaPadam GurungBirhan wakumaSamuel TilahunBerhane HailuAynalem BeyeneAgnes MontangeroChristina Barstow, PhDAnsu Tumbahangfe
