About us
Break It to Make It (BITMI) is a pioneering program dedicated to aiding formerly incarcerated individuals in their journey towards successful reintegration into society and achieving sustained self-sufficiency through higher education. Operating on a collaborative model, BITMI combines internal support services at LA City College with strategic partnerships with external organizations like Homeboy Industries and The Midnight Mission. At the heart of BITMI lies a commitment to providing comprehensive support tailored to the unique needs of its participants. Through a combination of educational guidance, re-entry support, and access to resources, the program empowers individuals to overcome the barriers and challenges associated with incarceration. By focusing on education as a catalyst for transformation, BITMI aims to dismantle the negative stigmas surrounding incarceration and empower participants to chart a new path towards academic success and personal fulfillment. Through personalized guidance and unwavering support, BITMI equips individuals with the tools and resources they need to thrive academically, professionally, and personally, enabling them to become valued contributors to their communities.

We are excited to welcome Alex home after almost 30 years of incarceration! He is only a few courses shy from graduating and transferring to a 4 year University! 👏🏽 “I am so grateful for the BITMI program! Counselor Sergio and the student workers have been a huge help with my college enrollment and transition back into the free world!”
