🚨 DC is facing a $4.4 million federal penalty due to SNAP processing errors in 20% of cases! Allison Miles-Lee, managing attorney at Bread for the City, highlights the impact of these errors with the story of a client who took in her niece and nephew after their mother passed away. Despite promptly reporting the increase in her household size, it took 18 months and several court hearings for her benefits to be adjusted, resulting in thousands of dollars in back payments owed to the family. #EJAFellowUpdate: This week in my clerkship at Bread for the City, I went to D.C. Superior Court to observe a child support contempt hearing and I've jumped into a research project regarding the enforcement of critical language access laws in D.C. I also attended insightful Washington Council of Lawyers Summer Forum sessions on criminal and immigration law. Thank you to Equal Justice America for raising funds to support law students in public interest this summer and to American University Washington College of Law for preparing me for this opportunity!

Today, America commemorates Juneteenth — the announcement of freedom to the last group of enslaved African Americans in 1865. This pivotal moment in history reminds us of the significant contributions African Americans have made to creating a more just and equal America as well as the ongoing struggle for equity and freedom for all. Our Vital Voices team is proud to support Bread for the City in our local community to serve this Juneteenth!
