About us

Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is guided by the belief that architecture transforms communities and inspires people. Founded in 2000 in the heart of Washington, DC, we are a firm of 30 highly-qualified and creative architects and designers - problem-solvers who thrive on finding innovative solutions to the challenges of cities and neighborhoods. We are passionate about the power of architecture to uplift and revitalize the physical environment and the economic and social conditions of our world. We operate in a collegial studio environment: each team member participates in all aspects of project design, development and execution. An open discussion of architectural ideas and client solutions is valued and encouraged. Our staff works on diverse projects, ranging in size and complexity from residential renovations and adaptive use to large-scale, commercial and mixed-use developments. Our team lives and works in the neighborhoods in which our projects are built. Partners and team members give back to the community through teaching and involvement in local professional, civic and volunteer organizations. This ethos of community involvement is encouraged at every level. We believe that architecture should be expressive of its time, fulfill client and community aspirations, respond appropriately to its physical context, and inspire the public by being memorable and creative. We are inspired by challenging site constraints, thoughtful restoration, adaptive use of existing buildings, contemporary design and modern insertion in historic fabric. Our work catalyzes, revitalizes and sustains environments ranging from urban neighborhoods to rural landscapes. We create bold, modern, visually expressive buildings that complement their surroundings and raise the aspirations of the public and our profession.

Another incredible Summer Picnic in the books! 🌞🌴🍹 From honoring our teams’ accomplishments to sharing a laugh under the sun, we had a blast taking a step out of the office for some bonding and celebration. In between great food and activities, we were happy to name new Associates to our leadership team at the event! Cheers to forging more memories that strengthen our professional family and inspire us all year long – we are ready to finish the second half of 2024 enthusiastically! #summerpicnic #teambuilding #officeculture #dcarchitects

The Randolph Road team is making significant progress! The crew recently finished the exterior skin for building three and is now working through finishes and preparing for owner walks in the same building. In addition, drywall is being hung and units are being insulated in the first four garden-style apartment buildings. Located in Silver Spring, MD, Randolph Road will soon offer a 195-unit, deeply affordable community for residents in Montgomery County. Included in the community will be family-sized three- and four-bedroom home options. In addition, amenities will include an on-site community center, on-site resident services staff and programming, a fitness center, a half-acre public park with a playground, picnic area, walkways, and open lawn areas, on-site childcare, and six EV charging stations. I am thrilled to announce that the 1 Hawaii construction closing occurred today! A huge thank you to the incredible Wesley Housing development team: Scott Kline, Greg Lloyd, Chris Weir, and Nory Flores. Wesley found a new partner and friend in Scott! We cannot appreciate this whole team enough - their unwavering commitment and expertise was instrumental in achieving this success. Most importantly, a heartfelt thanks to the residents who selected Wesley through the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), allowing us to own a little piece of Hawaii. We are so excited that 1 Hawaii will be a new four-story community, ideal for families or individuals. The original building offered only 34 units, from studio to two-bedroom floorplans, within a two-story building. With this full redevelopment, we will more than double the homes to 70 units in this increasingly redeveloped neighborhood, and include a mix of studios to three-bedroom units! We are delighted to work with James G. Davis Construction (DAVIS), Bonstra l Haresign ARCHITECTS, VIKA Virginia, LLC DC Department of Housing and Community Development, DC Housing Finance Agency, Enterprise Community Partners, Freddie Mac Multifamily, Grandbridge Real Estate Capital, Truist, JDC CONSTRUCTION COMPANY LLC Klein Hornig LLP and so many other partners! Thank you to the full Wesley (past and current) and consultant team for your hard work, dedication, and teamwork in achieving this remarkable milestone!

  • On June 5 – 8, the American Institute of Architects held their annual Conference on Architecture and Design in our hometown, Washington DC. Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS led project tours of a newly completed conversion project and of our longtime contributions to DC’s 14th Street and Logan Circle neighborhoods.   The AIA Committee on Design, under the leadership of David Greenbaum, FAIA, LEED AP assembled a panel of leading practitioners to learn about and tour 3 office to residential conversions projects. David Haresign FAIA and Ronnie Ali, LEED AP, showcased Park Ford, our award-winning office-to-residential conversion in Alexandria, VA with a presentation on the environmental, economic, community benefits and challenges associated with conversion projects to a sold-out 50-person tour group. Congratulations to fellow practitioners Duncan Lyons, RIBA, LEED AP BD C and Yulia Beltikova, AIA, LEED AP for their respective office-to-residential tours!   Bill Bonstra FAIA, LEED AP, organized 2 tours that came out of his recent published Washington on Foot tour guide. He led one tour through the Logan Circle and the Greater 14th Street Historic Districts along with architects Marc Fairbrother FAIA and Eric Colbert AIA. Bill, Marc and Eric provided fascinating insight into the clients, design and entitlements, Overlay zoning, and unique construction of the neighborhoods’ iconic buildings built 30 years after the MLK Riots devastated this area of the city. The tour included notable BHA projects: Studio Theatre, The Aston, Q14, John Wesley AME Church, 5 Logan Circle, culminating over lunch at our studio/retail building at 1728 14th Street, NW.   We are grateful for all who assisted us in these tours, and especially to the attendees who generated thoughtful questions and engaging discussions! #AIA24
