Thirty years ago on Sunday, September 8, 1994, a white BMW 318i rolled off the line at Plant Spartanburg becoming the first BMW assembled in South Carolina. Since that memorable day, BMW Manufacturing has assembled more than 6.8 million vehicles for our customers around the world. The plant has expanded multiple times, and the team has grown from 600 associates to more than 11,000. As part of the culmination of Workforce Development Month, Governor Henry McMaster and S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) Executive Director William Floyd presented BMW Manufacturing with the 2024 Workforce Champion Award at the Governor’s Mansion. This award honors an employer that has displayed extraordinary effort and innovation in developing and connecting educators and students with employment opportunities in South Carolina. BMW was selected as the honoree because of our commitment to providing hands-on experiences to middle and high schoolers with access to our state-of-the-art facility and our exceptional apprenticeship programs, which are the first of their kind in the state.   “The most important investment for BMW is our people, and our future workforce is right here in South Carolina. On Thursday, August 29th, BMW Purchasing and Supplier Network Americas hosted the 12th annual 2024 BMW Supplier Diversity Xchange at the Greenville Convention Center in South Carolina. The Xchange reports 2,500 registered attendees. Including 242 exhibiting Tier 1 suppliers, and approx. 1,000 Minority-owned, Women-owned and Veteran-owned businesses. This year's morning programming was initiated by welcome messages from South Carolina Lt. Governor, Pamela Evette and BMW's Supplier Diversity Lead, Stephanie Vera. The afternoon Luncheon Presentation was hosted by BMW Senior Vice President of Purchasing and Supplier Network, Oliver Haase. Along with special messages from President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC, Dr. Robert Engelhorn, and Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Purchasing and Supplier Network, Dr. Joachim Post. Keynote speakers this year included renowned speed painter David Garibaldi, who delivered an inspiring performance that combined art and storytelling. In combination with CEO and Founder of the ActOne Group, Janice Bryant Howroyd, whom shared her journey as a pioneering female entrepreneur, emphasizing the value of diversity in driving innovation and success in the business world. Operational Lead Stephanie Vera, states, "Representation matters and it is amazing to see the community come together to learn and build partnerships. On Wednesday, August 28, BMW Purchasing and Supplier Network Americas hosted the 2024 BMW Supplier Day at the Greenville Convention Center SC. The event, hosted by Senior Vice President Oliver Haase, welcomed Dr. Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, as well as the Governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster (South Carolina Governor's Office). In attendance were 600 supplier guests, business partners, and BMW management. The 5th year annual supplier summit included a celebration of 30 years of Plant Spartanburg; introducing Sky Foster as the moderator in the original BMW 3-series E36 "Signature Car", along with a presentation from Dr. Robert Engelhorn, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC. One of the many highlights were vehicle showings by Canden Bliss Jackson of the latest BMW 3-series and BMW M2, 25th Anniversary BMW X5, all-new BMW X3, and BMW Motorrad motorcycles. The main focus of the day was on quality, a "Call for Quality"; with various presentations from BMW Senior Vice Presidents Oliver Haase, Martin Frensch, and Florian Weig, as well as two valued suppliers. Responsible for the event was Scott M. Trembly, stating, "This was absolutely one of my favorite moments working at BMW. The day had everything to offer from celebrations, to product showings, and of course addressing quality throughout our entire supply chain. On August 18th BMW Manufacturing celebrated Family Day at Carowinds! We came together on this day for family and fun, but also to celebrate the legacy we have built and to look ahead to the future this team will drive. We not only celebrated our Ultimate Team10 family but also our 30th Anniversary and honored the 150 associates who have been with us since day one. Their names were displayed for everyone to see on the “Team10 Walk of Fame” at Carowinds. This day created countless memories for our associates and their families, and allowed us the time to say thank you for all that they do. Your commitment, drive, and eXcellence over the past 30 years are paving the way for the next 30 and beyond. The 2025 BMW X5 qualified for the TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. To be eligible for this award, IIHS winners must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap test, small overlap front and updated side tests, and the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation. The BMW Group is exploring the use of humanoid robots in production for the first time. During a trial run lasting two weeks at Plant Spartanburg, a humanoid robot from AI robotics company Figure successfully completed production tasks in the body shop. The robot, named Figure 02, inserted sheet metal parts into specific fixtures, which were then assembled as part of the chassis. Figure 02 is the highest-performing humanoid robot to market, says Figure.    Together with Figure, the BMW Group is testing and evaluating how humanoid robots can be used safely in automobile production. Working with robots and autonomous equipment is not new to BMW. We are always exploring the latest technology to make our processes more efficient, more ergonomic, and safer for our associates. Companies that invest in innovation such as this are more sustainable, become more productive, and have a competitive advantage.
