And then, suddenly, it was time for cleanup. Terry spoke as he cleaned: "It's a process. You follow the steps, you clean up right after, and this keeps your tools ready and fresh for the next job." "It's relaxing out here," chimed in Brenda, "It's between you and the concrete." They moved on to the next job, leaving the one of many curbs they would do today. Later, after lunch, they would circle back, remove the boards, and roughen up the concrete slightly so it is not slippery smooth and has some grip. "Working concrete is an art," Brenda mused as she worked, "There's a balance. If you mess with it too much, the water will rise to the surface and it won't dry. If you don't work it enough, it's rough and ugly instead of being beautiful. I like to make it beautiful. Balance."

"Concrete will always crack" explained Terry, "But by putting in control joints, I can tell the concrete WHERE to crack. I can guide it to crack where we want it to, instead of where we don't." These control joints are the straight cracks you normally see in sidewalks.
