Today marks the end of daylight saving time, and while we certainly enjoyed that extra hour of sleep, this time of year can signify the start of some seasonal mental and emotional challenges such as feelings of depression, irritation, sadness, loneliness and more. We hope that the following tips can help to bolster your winter mental health toolkit: 💪 Get moving: Research shows that as little as 90 minutes a week of exercise can have significant benefits on physical and mental health. Bonus points and benefits for any time spent exercising or walking outdoors 🥗 Eat a healthy diet: Get plenty of color on your plate to help target a wide variety of vitamins and nutrients. Omega 3 fats found in foods like fish, eggs and nuts can help with heart health, brain health and inflammation! 😴 Get good sleep: The CDC reports that adults should get at least 7 hours of sleep per night while teens need about 8-10 hours. Good sleep helps with brain health, physical recovery and emotional regulation. Try reading a book or meditating before bed instead of scrolling for even deeper sleep 💤 ✍ Have a plan: If you know this time of year is tough for you, devise a plan for how you can proactively ease struggles through things like routine, therapy, exercise, sleep hygiene and diet BEFORE it becomes more challenging. 💕 Be kind to yourself: We are not machines! Understand that everybody has hard days, even you. It is ok to rest, ask for help, make mistakes and to have fluctuations in your energy. Be kind and patient with yourself! #adolescentprograms #youngadultprograms #mentalhealthtips #parentingtips #outdoorprograms #wildernesstherapy

We’re looking forward to this at YATA in a couple weeks!
Co-Founder of Not Therapy | Former Troubled Teen | Thought Leader | Certified Young Adult Coach | Leaving people better than I found them
🌟 Join us at the YATA Conference for a special panel on The Overlooked Needs of Alumni Students! 🌟 🗓️ November 14 🕦 11:15 am 📍 Kon Tiki Ballroom Therapeutic programs can be life-changing, but the transition back into "normal" life often comes with unexpected challenges. Both Hayley and I know this journey firsthand, and we've made it our mission to support alumni students as they navigate the complexities of life post-treatment through our work at Not Therapy. At this panel, we’ll dive into the often invisible needs of students leaving therapeutic settings, share what’s working (and what isn’t), and explore how we can better support this community. Moderated by Tony Mosier from Telos, this conversation is for anyone passionate about making a difference in the transition of alumni leaving programs and stepping into their biggest transition yet. 💬 Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn, share, and advocate for a better transition experience. We’ll see you there! #YATAConference #NotTherapy #MentalHealthAwareness #StudentAlumni #LifeAfterTreatment #PanelDiscussion

Is your teen facing difficulties in school? Academic challenges are often a sign of deeper issues related to mental health, peer relationships, or a lack of support. At Blue Ridge, we offer outdoor therapeutic programs for adolescents (ages 12-18) and young adults (ages 18-28), providing unique opportunities to build self-esteem and develop emotional resilience. In a safe, distraction-free setting, participants learn valuable life skills such as cooking wholesome meals, staying active, exploring creative outlets, and practicing mindfulness and gratitude. They can even earn academic credits while immersed in our program. Dear Blue Ridge community, We are incredibly grateful for our dedicated team’s efforts in ensuring the safety and comfort of our students and staff, and for facilitating a smooth, timely return to the field. Because our field area and the town of Clayton were largely unaffected by Helene, our students have returned to the field, and both Blue Ridge and Emerald Arrow are operating as usual. Our thoughts are with those affected by Hurricane Helene. The Blue Ridge Mountains are central to our mission, and many of our staff call Western North Carolina home, giving us a deep connection to the region. We know WNC will need significant support during this time. For those looking to help, we encourage donations to local organizations actively working in Asheville and the surrounding areas (link in bio). Thank you for your continued support and concern during this time. We’re fortunate to have such a strong community, and we remain committed to the well-being of our students, staff, and the regions we care about. Please feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any questions and visit our linktree (in comments) for more information on how to assist recovery efforts in the affected areas. ❤️

Emerging adulthood is associated with the onset of mental health issues and the development of coping mechanisms like substance use. According to data from SAMHSA, Nearly half of young adults ages 18-25 had either a mental illness and/or substance use disorder in the last year, and young adults fall into the highest demographic for risk of substance misuse and abuse. Substance use disorders (SUDs) are associated with a variety of negative consequences, including deteriorating relationships, poor school performance, loss of employment, diminished mental health, and increases in sickness and death. This #nationalrecoverymonth, we want to spread the word that recovery is possible. We believe that all individuals and families deserve to not just survive, but to thrive. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out for help. "I am so lucky to work with girls who are bursting at the seams with talent. They are kind and courageous. They are artists, musicians, athletes. They tell funny jokes and creative stories. They have been great students, helpful siblings, advocates, and animal lovers. They have won awards, broken down barriers, and inspired others. It would be impossible for me to list all of the wonderful qualities I have witnessed in the girls I have worked with, but they all have one thing in common- adolescence has exacerbated challenges in their lives and they have struggled to make a safe and smooth transition into their teenage years."
