A powerful and personal message from Rebecca Crosby Humphreys, director of clinical relations, on the importance of raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. We invite you to take a moment to read and reflect on the ways we can all support mental health and well-being in our communities. 💙 #SuicidePreventionMonth

Director, Clinical Relations at Blue Cross of Idaho

I never thought about suicide growing up. As a youth, I only knew one person who had experience with suicide (or at least only one person who talked about it). When I moved to Idaho in 2002 and shortly after became a nurse, I quickly learned of the prevalence of suicide in Idaho – most specifically for youth. For as long as I have been aware, suicide has been the 2nd leading cause of death for teens in Idaho, second only to accidents. As years passed, I knew friends who lost children, my children knew peers who passed away and then my own family experienced the terror of suicide attempt.  And while suicide is not isolated to Idaho, I was experiencing these traumas at a much higher rate than my friends in other areas of the country. As a clinician, I am a passionate advocate for ensuring mental health is a part of every aspect of the healthcare ecosystem. I long for a day where there is not a separate reference to mental and behavioral health … those terms will be gone, and mental health will simply be healthcare just like any other condition. In that future state, we won’t have to enact laws to ensure parity for the care of mental health conditions. Mental health conditions will be thought of just like heart disease or cancer. Our friends, family, and communities will comprehend that mental health addresses conditions that affect the brain … which is an organ. An organ just like the heart, the stomach or your colon. An illness affecting the brain should not be stigmatized. My hope is destigmatizing mental health will lead to more people seeking treatment (in all forms) … and maybe, just maybe, as utilization of mental health services increases, suicide attempt and completion will decrease. During this month, where the nation illuminates the word “suicide” and lots of people post about the importance of suicide prevention – I wanted to share one thing we all could do to help destigmatize mental health and specifically suicide. Talk about it. It’s that simple. Use the word suicide. It is not a dirty word that should be whispered or muffled – it is a real word, with real impact and we should respect its place in our world, so use the word suicide. Ask those who express distress if they feel safe or think about suicide. You would be shocked to see relief when someone in distress is allowed to admit they think about suicide. Seek resources for those in need. And lastly, check on them after. Help them follow up if they haven’t, be their advocate if they can’t take the next step in getting help. For those in Idaho, here is the link to the Idaho Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. https://call988idaho.com/ The site has great tools and resources. And as someone who has used this lifeline (you can call or text, 988), my appreciation, respect and commitment will forever be to share how it can save lives.

We had a great time at Boise Pride this year, which is now our largest employee volunteer event! We’ve found the festival is a great time to be present and connect with members of the community, including participating in a very fun parade. Being at Boise Pride, as well as other Pride events around the state, is part of our commitment to supporting an environment and a workplace where all feel included and free from discrimination, including the LGBTQ community. Happy 35 years, Boise Pride! It was a joy to be out there. #BoisePride #CommnityofKindness #BlueCrossIdaho #Boise #Idaho

Based in Boise, Idaho, Faces of Hope recently celebrated the opening of their second location in Treasure Valley, which will help expand their mission and enhance resources throughout the community. Our CEO, Paul Zurlo, joined the Sales and Account Management team to support this important cause.

The Cascade Medical Center Foundation’s annual golf tournament brought the community together for a day of golfing and fundraising! Our team was grateful to be there, contributing to the cause alongside community partners who share a commitment to enhancing healthcare services in Idaho. Supporting medical facilities in the more rural parts of our state is crucial, and events like these play a vital role in ensuring that communities have access to quality care. We’re excited to see how these contributions will help Cascade Medical Center HD continue its important work in our communities.
