ERCOT hit a new record for battery dispatch tonight at 3.2 GW. This smashed the previous record set less than a year ago by over 1 GW ( 47%). At the peak, batteries were serving 5.1% of load in ERCOT — an all-time record based on our tracking. Net load shattered the 30-day average today, with the peak clearly at the point of most duress on the grid. The operational impacts of net load continue to rise in importance relative to load alone. While PRC maintained a healthy margin, capacity with an offer in SCED declined all evening to very low levels resulting in prices just a couple dollars short of $5,000/MWh.

ERCOT market doing what it was designed to do - send price signals for investment. Yesterday's thermal outages, renewable intermittency, and good old fashioned warm weather sent a very clear price signal indicating the need for additional flexible capacity. #ERCOT #batterystorage

ERCOT: we saw the ECRS get activated as operating reserves dropped below 4,000 mw, Free Non Ancillary dipped to approximately 1 gw, and the RT prices spiked to nearly the price cap at $4,964.00 (excluding RT price adders). All in this scenario is something that I have been warning about for years as we have increased load while also increasing PVGR nameplate/ evening die out. Evening ramp due to swinging loads and generation is becoming very difficult to manage, irrespective of what energy storage assets are online or their advocates claim. Further, ECRS is withholding units that would otherwise be available to SCED which jogs the RT price up faster and harder as seen tonight. That is not to say that the quasi capacity market ERCOT has developed is entirely a bad design, it just erodes the energy only price mechanism and makes thermal developers reticent to build new nameplate due to skewed renewables offer curves. What ultimately caused this "shoulder" high price event is a few things: first was the fact this is a massive thermal outage window, second very low wind output, and third just a good old fashioned warm May day. Outages for thermal units are normal and need to happen during low demand times of the year. ERCOT has specifically worked to reduce maintenance windows and strives to keep units online when needed. Regardless, units still need routine maintenance to be ready for heavy load times during the winter and summer peaks. Today just so happened to coincide with one of those core windows. Wind generation today was low, this is due to low wind speeds and likely nameplate de-rate due to the large number of re-power programs. Regardless, wind is a intermittent resource which from time to time over and under produces, and today was just a low wind day. The last factor was that today was simply warm. Heat coupled with a massive population and C&I increase in ERCOT over the past 20 years means we have more frequent low reserve margin days. Unlike the rest of NERC, TRE load has exploded while firm dispatchable generation nameplate has not. Thus days like today are becoming more frequent and worrisome for ERCOT and Texas rate payers alike. #ercot

  • Exciting Announcement! East Point Energy, an Equinor Company, has greenlit the Citrus Flatts Energy Center in Cameron County, Texas. Acquired from Black Mountain Energy Storage in late 2023, Citrus Flatts will provide 100 MW/200 MWh of renewable energy. Construction begins this year, with commercial operations starting in early 2026, enhancing the grid's reliability in Cameron County. "It was a pleasure working with the East Point team, and we are pleased to have assisted them on their journey to be one of the most significant renewables and storage operators in the U.S.," says Witt Duncan, VP & CCO of BMES. Our collaboration underscores our shared commitment to driving positive change in the energy landscape. https://lnkd.in/gbbCrGeq

MISO report out - Some highlights worth people paying attention to regarding grid reliability: “There are immediate and serious challenges to the reliability of our region’s electric grid … the transition that is underway to get to a decarbonized end state is posing material, adverse challenges to electric reliability.” “A key risk is that many existing ‘dispatchable’ resources that can be turned on and off and adjusted as needed are being replaced with weather-dependent resources such as wind and solar that have materially different characteristics and capabilities.” “Incremental load growth due to electric vehicles and other aspects of electrification is exerting new pressure on the grid.” “While electricity demand has been flat for many years, it is expected to increase due to the electrification of other sectors of the economy.” “While wind and solar produce needed clean energy, they lack certain key reliability attributes that are needed to keep the grid reliable every hour of the year.” Some energy sources are not 'like for like'. #EnergyStorage
