Environmental Services

A national community dedicated to empowering Black girls, women and gender expansive people across the climate sector.

About us

Black Girl Environmentalist is a national community dedicated to empowering Black girls, women and non-binary people in the climate movement. We create pathways for emerging climate leaders of color to thrive across environmental disciplines through the areas of: community building, green workforce development, and narrative change. BGE was founded by climate activist and Rhodes Scholar Wawa Gatheru. Having been in the environmental and climate space for almost ten years, Wawa could not help but notice that while Black girls and women exist at the forefront of environmental injustice, they were amongst the least supported or celebrated in the mainstream environmental movement. She founded BGE to help cultivate opportunities for BGE's to be supported and empowered. BGE is collectively committed to centering Black women and non-binary folks in the environmental movement while shifting inequitable power structures that create barriers to access environmental disciplines. Our ultimate goal is to help create a climate movement made in the image of all of us.

The 100 Ways to Catch the Wind film is in the final stretch of fundraising. Support the campaign to make this film a reality and amplify the grassroots efforts of women climate leaders. The film showcases stories of women at the forefront of the climate movement and advocates for their essential role in shaping a sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/dmzxxEwa

    • 100 ways to catch the wind. A film following women leaders bringing local climate solutions to the global stage, looking to fund their ideas & help their communities survive.
    • Update on our film: 100 Ways to Catch the Wind. We just returned from UNGA & Climate Week, documenting women leaders pushing for urgent action. Feminist goals are slipping, and climate finance is failing to prioritize women-led solutions.

100 Ways to Catch the Wind aims to shine a spotlight on these critical narratives, amplifying grassroots efforts and inspiring global change. By sharing the stories of women leaders in climate action, we can harness their insights and drive momentum for a sustainable future. Together, we can elevate women's voices and ensure that their innovative solutions take center stage in the fight against climate change.

Rhodes Scholar | Founder & Executive Director, Black Girl Environmentalist I Forbes 30 Under 30

The Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship Program Video Series pt. 1 is OUT NOW!! This summer, Black Girl Environmentalist hosted the inaugural cohort of the Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship - a 10-week climate internship pipeline program that focuses on increasing opportunities for emerging leaders of color to learn about, engage with, and enter the environmental and climate sectors with adequate funding, mentorship, and community building. As a GenZ-led and serving organization, we understood that digital storytelling would be a critical part of a. illustrating why this program is important and necessary and b. showcasing that a Black youth-led climate organization is well positioned and capable of delivering high quality, scalable programming for our community. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who assume we are merely an "instagram" organization. Boo ageism! We have had the pleasure to work alongside Rachel Peace on a video series that highlights the experiences of our fellows - from internships to retreat. I am so excited to share the rest of our videos with you all. In the meantime, please enjoy our first video recap! Also, remember: Applications for partner organizations to participate in Black Girl Environmentalist’s 2025 Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship program are now open!!! If you are a company committed to diversifying the environmental/climate sector, this is the perfect opportunity for you! One of the best ways to support Black Girl Environmentalist is by sharing this post and/or tagging an organization you think might be interested! We want to get the word out to aligned partners who are equally invested in supporting the next generation of climate leaders of color.

During Climate Week, I had the opportunity to moderate a panel on the Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship, a program I've had the honor of leading. This panel allowed me to reflect on the past six months, where I've had the privilege of bringing the Hazel M. Johnson Fellowship Program to life while working at Black Girl Environmentalist! This has been an exciting and difficult process of creating one of the first climate pipeline programs for Gen Z by Gen Z. From processing over 200 applications, placing 14 talented fellows at top climate internships like at Coach, The Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University, WWF and Bloomberg's Beyond Petrochemicals among others, and cultivating a community of care, learning, and growth with fellows. The fellowship ended with a retreat to solidify the cohort experience as we built a lasting community and reflected on this experience. I couldn't ask for a better inaugural fellowship cohort! Thank you, Wawa Gatheru, for trusting me with your vision and giving me the space to co-create this amazing program. Thank you to all the amazing 14 fellows Nnennaya Ihejirikah Jayla Sheffield Destiny Nash Amelia Linton Reihan A. Emma Abercrombie Peters Kikelomo Sanni Sophia Boyd Raianna Grant Allyah Keith Aiyana Washington, Arianna Lawrence Sydney DuBose Semawit Ayele who invested their summer in a groundbreaking new fellowship led by young people and our 12 partner organizations that believed in our vision of empowering the next generation of climate leaders of color! I can't wait to come back bigger and better next year.

    JD Candidate at Pace Law

Last Friday— after 10 years of dreaming, three months of planning, fundraising, and six successful sponsorships later, in my role as BLSA president, former EJ chair, co-founder of Altered Collective, and with the support of my teams— I successfully spearheaded a nature immersion field trip serving my former central Brooklyn public middle school. Thirty young children, their science teacher, and the school's principal, traveled over two hours through New York rush hour to my former undergraduate campus, Pace University Pleasantville. The day was filled with various green exposures and a comprehensive presentation on pursuing higher education broadly, pursing law school specifically, and environmental careers. The state of disadvantage at my middle school remains a sensitive subject for me. As I have come to learn, the systematic defunding has exacerbated the turbulence much to my frustration. But the administration’s good work is inspiring and last Friday was not turbulent in the slightest, it was lovely! Hudde is my home. It was homecoming. I wanted to share this moment with you all. This event was in partnership with Wawa Gatheru‘s Black Girl Environmentalist’s NYC Hub, Pace University-Pleasantville/Briarcliff Campus, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - Official’s Pace University chapter, my project Altered Collective, Pace Law’s Black Law Students Association, ELS Environmental Justice Division, and LAMBDA. A special thanks to my former middle school, you have honored us.

Policy Intern at EESI | John Glenn Fellow | Public Management, Leadership, and Policy Student at The Ohio State University

Last week, as part of the Black Girl Environmentalist Mentorship cohort, I had the incredible opportunity to join Earthjustice for an advocacy fly-in on Capitol Hill. Over two days, we advocated for two key pieces of legislation: the H.R. 8191 CROWN Act and the H.R. 1705 A. Donald McEachin Environmental Justice for All Act. Both of these bills are critical for advancing racial and environmental equity. In our Midwest and West group, we met with staffers from several states, including Ohio, Illinois, California, and New Mexico. As a policy intern in DC, gaining firsthand exposure to the policy process from a new perspective was incredibly valuable. It not only broadened my understanding but also deepened my appreciation for the vital role advocacy plays in shaping meaningful change. I am incredibly grateful for Black Girl Environmentalist and Earthjustice - Brielle Green and Auburn Bell for making this experience possible, and I am excited to see where our collaboration takes us in the future!🌱
