Like bin stores across the country, BinStar is making lemonade out of particularly mouth-puckering lemons: the avalanche of e-commerce returns. The returns rate was 14.5% of sales for 2023 across US retail, for a total value of $743 billion, according to the National Retail Federation. BinStar, which has an ethos of what founder and CEO Jack Laughlin calls “loosely organized chaos,” has a rabidly loyal customer base and is about to open its fourth store in under a year. And its pricing strategy is wild, where the stores are restocked before they open on Saturday, when everything is priced at $19, then all prices drop to $15 on Sunday and get successively cheaper for the week’s remaining days, starting Friday at $2 and dropping to $1 after 4pm.
