Seems like a long time ago when I participated in this international panel of experts that reviewed the state of obesity care and alignment of clinical practice guidelines with emerging science. But the paper is out and once again, we see international consensus for the need to develop and implement more prescriptive guidelines that support #personcentered, #nonstigmatising and #evidencebased #obesitycare. The challenge to avoid dichotomies in obesity continues. Of course we need prevention and treatment strategies. I wish we could get past these silos and start working together towards shared solutions and goals. #bias #shiftingparadigms Bias180

Language matters! I sometimes feel like a broken record when I share with people why we need to avoid stigmatising language and why we need to use person-first language! I remember when Mary Forhan first introduced me and the team Obesity Canada – Obésité Canada to the use of person-first language in research, clinical practice, and policy! So many years have passed but slowly, thanks to passionate advocates and researchers like Ted Kyle Obesity Action Coalition and Rebecca Puhl we are seeing global policy change! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

We need enforced policies to require inclusion of people with a higher weight or obesity in clinical trials. This is an easy solution to a significant problem. Ted Kyle Bias180

Research that simplifies obesity and ignores all the other science about the complexity of obesity is pervasive and not helpful. The interpretation of these results and the spreading of this information is contributing to more bias, stigma and discrimination against people who live with this serious chronic disease. In a sign of how dramatically the Canadian workplace is evolving from a #mentalhealth perspective, consider the Autism Workforce Development Hub. It’s a product of the internationally respected Geneva Centre for Autism. The organization is a Toronto-based non-profit that provides education and training to professionals and educators. The hub is designed to “[p]repare everyone for a successful employment experience with free training and consultation programs that bridge the gap between employers and neurodiverse employees.” How many of us could have imagined such a thing a decade ago? The Autism Workforce Development Hub delivers leadership training for managers, onsite workplace consultations and free training for #neurodiverse adult job seekers in the GTA.
