Explore starting a startup. Over 1,000 startups launched and $2B raised.

About us

Our mission is to help more people start better startups. ODF is a program we created over four years ago to help those at the exploration stage of starting a company. So far, we've helped over 1000 companies get started and raise over $2 billion. Starting a company is really exciting, but there are so many things you need to figure out in order to actually build one. - "Who might I start my company with?" - “What might we build?” - “Who might our initial customers be?” - “Should we raise funding soon, or should we try to bootstrap in the beginning?" These and many more questions are what we refer to as the "missing pieces"—the things you need to figure out to know if starting a company is right for you and what company you should ultimately build. With ODF, we bring together 80 to 100 people who are at the very same stage as you. They're all exceptionally talented, and they're all trying to figure it out together.

New Deep End conversation with Eoghan McCabe (it's too long to post full video on LI — link in comments :)) We covered moving to America/SF to build Intercom (>$1B) and the benefits of naivety, hard work, and rejection much more. 10 important ideas (and quotes) from this conversation: 1/ Innocence and Naivety Can Be a Superpower “There was a phenomenal amount of naivety that allowed people to do things that were kind of like conventionally the wrong thing to do.” 2/ Be Contrarian, but Not Recklessly So “If you talk to 100 funds right now and you can’t raise money, change the damn idea.” 3/ In-Person Work is Better “In person is better. And I think that the people who promote remote working are lazy and antisocial.” 4/ Find Your True Passion—or You'll Fail “Please follow your passion. Please do the thing that you love.” 5/ Great Companies Ride Multiple Waves “Great companies are built on successive waves… secular movements. They either create them themselves or they jump on ones that have started already.” 6/ Hard Work is Under Attack—But It's Essential “Most likely you’re going to want to need to work seven days a week and 12 hours a day to get your thing off the ground.” 7/ Extreme Homogeneity Early On Beats Diversity “In early-stage startups, you want extreme homogeneity. You want people who believe what you believe.” 8/ Customer Intimacy Over Everything “Obsess about talking to customers… getting inside not just their heads but their hearts.” 9/ Early Failure and Rejection Strengthens You “The things that bruise our egos the most tend to eviscerate the parts of our ego that were making us so fragile in the first place.” 10/ Hiring Brilliant People is More Important than the Idea “The people who put that team together had an eye for that X factor.” This was an incredible talk recorded live during On Deck's ODF22 cohort. If you're thinking of starting a startup apply for ODF23 which kicks off in early November. Thanks again to Eoghan and Intercom (and especially Alan Mc Glinchey) for hosting us.

⚙️🚀 How Traba is Redefining Staffing for the Light Industrial Sector 🚀⚙️ In a world where e-commerce is booming and staffing is outdated, Traba is leading the way by connecting businesses with flexible, high-quality workers. 💼 Founded in 2021 by Mike Shebat and Akshay Buddiga, Traba was born out of the frustration of outdated staffing processes. With industry fill rates as low as 46% and days-long hiring delays, Traba set out to build a tech-forward solution to streamline staffing for warehouses, distribution centers, and more. 🌐 📦 As global B2C sales climb from $3.6 trillion to $5.5 trillion by 2027, Traba is here to support the logistics backbone of e-commerce with an innovative approach to staffing. Workers benefit from flexible, well-paying gigs, while businesses get the talent they need to meet rising demand. It's always special to welcome back ODF alumni to share their stories about leaving their job, meeting their co-founder and starting their startup. Mo El Mahallawy left Airbnb and started Shepherd — but not before exploring multiple ideas with co-founder Justin Levine.

One lesson from Mo El Mahallawy: don’t assume ability to pay. Sometimes users love the product but have no budget or purchasing authority. ODF22 loved hearing Mo talk about meeting co-founder Justin Levine via ODF and working through a range of ideas before finding success (and customers who were excited to pay) with Shepherd.
