Today, we had the privilege of participating in a panel organized by the Sacramento Metro Chamber as part of their 24th annual Study Mission right here in St. Louis! Emily Lohse-Busch our Executive Director alongside Gabe Angieri of Arch Grants, Phil Taylor of Bayer, and Stephanie Tinsley Regagnon of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, spoke with delegates from Sacramento's civic, business, and elected leadership to chat agtech, innovation, and regional ecosystem building. The discussion centered around how St. Louis became a leader in the innovation, entrepreneurial, and agtech spaces. Specifically, the panel spoke about being in the heart of the heartland and building innovation around proximity to farmers and agriculture. About the foresight corporate, government, and civic leaders had 25 years ago to take measurable steps in infrastructure and community building to facilitate the next wave of innovation. Finally, highlighting the vital role of collaboration and buy-in across stakeholders to make sure the ecosystem is cohesive and connected. A heartfelt thank you to John Selep for moderating and Christine Ault for organizing this panel. Additionally, thank you to St. Louis native, Dr. Gary S. May, Chancellor of University of California, Davis, for his inspiring opening remarks!

A SEED PORTFOLIO BACKED BY RESEARCH Benson Hill’s proprietary #seed portfolio is backed by decades of research. Our flagship Ultra-High Protein, Low Oligosaccharide (UHP-LO) #soybeans have been a focus of academic research and development since 2012 and successfully demonstrate the positive impact UHP-LO soybeans can deliver for end users in animal #feed. Commercial feeding trials conducted in 2020 demonstrated advantages over commodity soy when UHP-LO soy was incorporated into the ration, including higher protein and more metabolizable energy. After three years of further seed development, a Q1 2024 feeding trial showed how the current UHP-LO varieties, when used in veg-fed broiler diets, drove more significant feed cost reductions than previous generations trialed in 2020, while supporting improved bird performance. The trial also confirmed the total value created with Benson Hill #genetics to be within the range we previously communicated ($100 to $230/acre). This UHP-LO feeding trial has since expanded into broader commercial use by an integrated poultry player. In addition, Benson Hill has initiated three new feeding trials with other large #poultry producers for the second half of 2024, representing more than 40 percent of the broiler industry. #Harvest24 is in full swing with Benson Hill, and our Illinois #soybean fields are yielding more than just a strong harvest—they’re packed with #protein and potential. 🌱🚜 We’re proud to partner with local farmers like Justin Arthur and Jeremy Stutsman, who are driving innovation in central Illinois with our BH36U204 soybean variety. This variety delivers better soybeans for end users across feed, food, and fuel markets, aligning with our mission to lead the pace of innovation in soy quality traits with AI-driven seed advancements, proprietary genetics, and rapid prototyping. It’s about more than farming—it’s about fueling the future through Made from Better crops that benefit both people and the planet. Celebrating National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month   Each year, Benson Hill observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The theme for 2024 is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”   The national observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period beginning Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.   The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Finally, Day of the Races or Día de la Raza, which is October 9, falls within this 30-day period.   What is the difference between #Hispanic and #Latino?   Hispanic and Latino are the two most used terms to describe Americans with Latin American and Caribbean ancestry. You may often see these terms used interchangeably, but different people understand and use these terms differently. The National Museum of the American Latino uses the term “Latino” to describe the diverse residents of the United States with cultural or ancestral ties to Latin America or the Caribbean. For many, the term "Latino" also creates room for acknowledging Black, Indigenous, Asian, and other heritages on equal terms with European ancestry. The term “Hispanic” is used to signal a connection to Spain or the Spanish language.   Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta: Leaders in Labor Rights in Agriculture Instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta were prominent Hispanic leaders in the fight against the unfair treatment of farm workers in the United States. In 1962, they founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later merged with other unions to become the United Farm Workers of America (UFW). In the years since, UFW has raised the minimum wage, improved workers rights, improved farmworkers health and safety and led immigration reform. Progress for farm workers would not have happened without these and other Hispanic and Latinx leaders.   -Compiled by Benson Hill's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) committee, as led by Benson Hill’s Employee Council, with thanks to Savitha Chelladurai.
