Today, we wrap up our #PrideMonth features with Chad Bay, our Marketing Communications Manager! Chad’s 13 years with Benesch have been filled with experiences that have made him feel welcomed and supported both professionally and personally. “In my role, I work alongside folks from all our offices, at every level within the company. I have found, by and large, everyone to be warm and accepting. Even more than that, I truly feel that my husband is a welcomed member of the ‘Benesch family,’ too, and that is really, really special to me. The people who work here care about each other, and the genuine connections and support we give to each other on a personal level is awesome.” Chad acknowledges that every member of the LGBTQ community has experienced a different level of support from families, workplaces and beyond, but certain commonalities still unite them. “Chosen family is a familiar concept to many of us in the LGBTQ community. While every one of our personal coming out stories is different, there are similar threads that carry through. Some of those might be positive and affirming, but others result from being shunned or misunderstood by family members, peers and colleagues, or larger institutions. The ongoing fight for our civil liberties and the legacy of those who came before us, to give us so much of the freedom we enjoy today, loom large over our heads. You can feel that shared history and the convergence of our individual stories as we uplift and support each other. There is a shared language and point of view that unites us, no matter our backgrounds, vocations or other factors.” As Pride Month comes to an end, Chad reminds us of the substantial cultural impacts the LGBTQ community continues to have. “Theatre and the arts have been a huge part of my life from childhood onward. I studied theatre in college and continue to be involved in Chicago’s vibrant arts scene. The LGBTQ community is, and has always been, an essential leader in the arts. Theatre specifically offers opportunities for artists to devise and share work with an audience that makes all of us ask big questions, engage in difficult conversations, and consider points of view that are different from our own.” To get insight into the gay experience in America, Chad invites you to check out a recent work that inspired him. “It’s a play called ‘The Inheritance’ by Matthew Lopez. Even picking up a copy from a local bookstore and giving it a read is bound to have an emotional impact (it did on me—I’m hoping to see a production, or even be in it, one day…).” #pride #LGBTQ #LifeAtBenesch

Our celebration of #PrideMonth continues and today we are introducing you to Brian Moreno!   Brian joined Benesch in 2017 and quickly felt comfortable being out at work. “Not even two weeks after I started working at Benesch, I met two other coworkers who had already been working here for a while that were out at work and very comfortably talked about their partners and even had photos of them at their desks.” This gave Brian the confidence to come out at work within seven months of starting at Benesch.   Now, Brian is co-chair of Benesch Pride, our Employee Resource Group dedicated to building a network of members committed to the advancement and affirmation of all LGBTQ employees at Benesch.   “Being able to start working at a new place and knowing from the second you walk in that there is already a group for fellow LGBTQ folks to meet and support each other is a very big relief. It shows that the company respects our community enough to have our own private space that can work to help make needed changes in the company and provide any support that we feel is needed.”   Brian recognizes that coming out at work can feel very overwhelming and has a bit of advice for anyone currently exploring their identity or considering coming out.   “Take things one step at a time. Look for the one friend you can really connect with. Having even just one person that you are able to come out to and share your genuine self with is very liberating. You don’t feel like you have to wear any masks or keep up any walls because they see you as a whole and are supportive of who you are.”   #EDI #pride #LGBTQ #LifeAtBenesch
