Our client had a problem, their feed tank was outdated…. We were approached by a client who had an outdated feed tank that no longer met their lab needs. During the consultation with the client, we gathered the specifics of the project and the client’s expectations. Our client expressed that their unit had no heating apparatus, no way to drain the water circulating inside the jacket, and the unit needed a drain pipe. The feed tank would require custom plumbing to help the water drain from the system as well as circulate throughout the feed tank properly. Based on the client’s direction, our QC Engineer created a CAD file of the components that needed to be added to the unit. After finalizing the design we began the fabrication process. Design & Fabrication: In order to mount the custom electrical box, two custom brackets were cut and welded to fit the measurements of the feed tank. A custom stainless steel cover was fabricated to cover all the components that were being mounted on the side of the feed tank. In order to properly drain the unit, our in-house welder created a small opening on the bottom of the system and then attached a drain pipe to the opening. Our electrical technician built and wired the electrical box that allows precise temperature regulation for the unit. Why is the temperature of the tank so important?  A well heated feed tank will help viscous material flow easier which avoids unnecessary clogging. After the electrical box was mounted onto the unit, our team started assembling the custom plumbing, the chugger pump and the thermocouple. Quality Control Step: After all components were attached, our lead technician performed a quality control check (QC) on the tank. The QC process consists of performing a backflow test to determine if the water is circulating properly in the jacket of the unit. It’s also a useful way to determine if the unit has any leaks. A backflow test usually takes about 8-24 hours to ensure there are no leaks present in the unit. Final Steps: Once the backflow test is completed and there aren't any issues, the electrical box is turned on, and all of the components on the feed tank are thoroughly inspected. The water is circulated again and the PID controller is programmed to 90 degrees. Once the feed tank properly heats up and there are no issues, the unit is then drained and left to dry. After passing all inspections, the unit is ready for use and undergoes final packaging for delivery. Overall this custom feed tank took about a month. We successfully customized the feed tank for our client and made it more efficient to use. We appreciate our clients' trust in helping them solve a problem and fix the pain points in their labs.
