New rules for the adoption of new medical technologies by the National Health Service (NHS) in England are proposed in a consultation which closes 15th August. Of particular interest to our clients are which technologies will be selected for review and new opportunities for adoption by the NHS. The proposed new pathways cover the whole product lifecycle: early-stage products, products with a sound evidence base, and mature products with many competitors.   The early-stage pathway allows for reimbursement for promising products while evidence is collected to allow a full cost effectiveness analysis.  For the first time the medical technology HTA pathway for reviewing cost-effectiveness will include those that are not cost saving. Products that are found to be cost-effective, whether or not they are cost saving, will now be eligible for the funding mandate for medical technologies, a fast-track reimbursement mechanism for promising innovations. The evidence requirements to support HTA at these three stages are different.
