A team of federal contractor and national laboratory engineers and scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management has been nationally distinguished as “Heroes of Chemistry” for making the world better through their effort, ingenuity, creativity and perseverance. The American Chemical Society recognized a team of seven individuals, representing Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), Savannah River National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and DOE for the integrated effort in developing and deploying a first-of-a-kind separations chemistry that is remediating millions of gallons of radioactive waste through EM’s Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) at the Savannah River Site (SRS). https://okt.to/sGkRp2

Majoring in Operations Management and Marketing, Katie is eager to bring her academic insights into the real-world environment of Battelle this summer. The Battelle Innovation Gathering is a celebration of the invention process. Each year, staff members present their ideas to their peers and several are chosen for further development. This year’s BIG award winners: First Place: Chemist Brynnae Williams and Subsurface Scientist/Engineer Darlene Zybala won for their idea to make asphalt that helps the environment. Second Place: Materials Scientist Carl Jacobson for idea for transparent timber. People's Choice: Computer Engineer Ryan Patton, Ph.D. for his idea for smarter blood banks. Business Needs Winner: Data Scientist Abbie Ackermann Enders, PhD for an innovative use for AI to help match skills to needs. This year we had two impressive individuals providing external perspective on our judging panel—Caitlin Reimers Brumme CEO of MassChallenge and Erin McKenna from Mass General Brigham.
