  • ANNOUNCING WALK ON BY! Creative Alliance, TENT Rotterdam, and Baltimore-Rotterdam Sister City Committee, present Walk On By: an exhibition and cultural exchange that connects Black artists and their diverse experiences, across the Atlantic. Walk On By: Baltimore-Rotterdam Exhibition & Artist Exchange Creative Alliance in Baltimore, MD, USA: Exhibition: September 26 – November 30, 2024 Opening Reception: September 27, 2024 TENT in Rotterdam, The Netherlands: Exhibition: Spring 2025 More info: https://lnkd.in/e-huKE9A Explore the Black Atlantic through the diverse stories of local artists in the historical port cities of Baltimore and Rotterdam, through exhibitions in both countries and an exchange program. FEATURING works by Schaun Champion (Baltimore), Charles Mason III (Baltimore), Naomi King (Rotterdam), kolpeace (Baltimore), Djon Seedorf (Rotterdam), and Tarona (Rotterdam).
Curated by Joy Davis, Visual Arts Director at Creative Alliance and founder of Waller Gallery. "Walk On By" explores the African diaspora in two historic industrial port cities, Baltimore and Rotterdam, through the many-layered and diverse stories that local artists can tell. In collaboration with Creative Alliance (Baltimore) and TENT Rotterdam (Rotterdam), Baltimore-based curator Joy Davis bridges conversations between different Black diasporic communities and art practices within their expansive mediums. The project is in response to the Dionne Warwick song of the same name that parallels the necessity to commune and communicate with one’s community. The project begins its journey this September in Baltimore at Creative Alliance, and then travels to Rotterdam in the spring of 2025. Participating artists travel to each city during the exhibitions to experience the culture, engage with the community and artists, and create lasting connections across the Atlantic. #walkonby #baltimoresistercities #baltimorerotterdam #baltimorexrotterdam Thank you for your support: Terra Foundation for American Art, Dutch Culture USA, US Embassy The Hague, Gemeente Rotterdam, Maryland State Arts Council #mdartscouncil, The Netherland-America Foundation

#Tubebarrier, a flexible temporary flood defence barrier developed in the Netherlands, will be used by the City of Annapolis to protect the city and its residents from flooding and water damage. The Tubebarrier is designed to be deployed quickly and efficiently in the event of flooding. It consists of a flexible tube that automatically fills itself with water to retain water. The system is modular, reusable, and can be set up without electricity or pumps, making it ideal for emergency situations. During a visit to the Netherlands in November 2023, #NWPmember Dutch Water Prevention showed the City of Annapolis how effective and user-friendly this innovation is. Dutch Water Prevention eventually installed a demonstration model in Annapolis, where the Tubebarrier was successfully deployed several times. 💬 “The first success of the Tubebarrier in the United States is a very nice milestone and also shows the power of joint efforts and cooperation between the Netherlands and the United States,” says Bas Jonkman, Professor of Integrated Hydraulic Engineering at Delft University of Technology. Announcing all our Practice Place collaborators 🔮  Join our next Practice Place this Friday!    How do we create conditions for a sustainable and hopeful design practice? IABR 2024 introduces a Practice Place, a meeting space in the exhibition, where we call on the architectural community at large to come together around the transformation of practice. During our next Practice Place ‘Towards Bioregional Building?’ this Friday, July 19, we will conduct a workshop to train attendees in organizing place-based meetings around systemic and local questions. Studio Inscape (NL) will spark imagination inspired by their Bioregional Design Game. meta knol & Christiane Bosman are giving a workshop on future thinking. Nature of Hope curator Catherine Koekoek moderates the event. Towards Bioregional Building? is part two of a series of seven day-long workshops. It will be documented in a living archive in the exhibition, inspire a podcast series in collaboration with de Architect NL, and ultimately lead to a New Narrative for Architecture and Urbanism (NNAU) that will be festively presented on the closing weekend of the biennial. The Practice Place is organized in collaboration with Ministerie van de Toekomst. The spoken language is Dutch.  The event is free, but registration is required! Nice story featuring our work on climate change in Baltimore "Ben Zaitchik, a professor in Johns Hopkins University’s Earth & Planetary Sciences Department, is part of a group setting up weather stations around the city, particularly in underserved neighborhoods, and meeting with residents to discuss environmental issues and the weather monitoring. The goal of the project, called the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative, is to inform the city’s climate change planning in the years ahead. Zaitchik and his team are evaluating solutions that could ease the heat island effect — going beyond just planting trees and other greenery. Things like painting rowhouse roofs white and installing permeable pavers instead of giant slabs of asphalt. They’re also looking to characterize the effect of extreme heat on vulnerable people, who have no choice but to spend time outside working or taking public transit, or who must spend time indoors without adequate air conditioning. The effort must go beyond merely counting heat-related deaths, Zaitchik said." https://lnkd.in/eRM9QV9q

A coalition of Amsterdam based Archives, Museums and Historical institutes* with the generous support of the Insinger Foundation has taken the initiative for a five-year programme that offers three two-month long fellowships per year for curators, archivists and historians in the field of slavery history, starting in the Fall of 2024.  Applications can be sent to the International Institute of Social History to the attention of Jacqueline Rutte. [email protected] https://lnkd.in/eUvVKyut The fellowships are open to professionals working on the history of slavery in the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the Indonesian archipelago, linked to the Dutch involvement in slave trade and slave labour.  The attention to the Dutch colonial slavery past has increased considerably over the last years. Especially communities that were subject to the contemporary ramifications such as systemic racism pushed for acknowledgement and changes in perspectives and priorities within academic institutions, museums and archives. A missing link is the input and expertise of inhabitants of societies that were colonized and where slavery and other forms of forced labour were rampant. The slavery past has a broad and pervasive impact, both in personal histories and the social structures of these societies. The questions, perspectives, and expertise of young professionals (especially historians, archivists, librarians, and curators) from societies affected by this colonial slavery past and its knock-on effects in the Americas, Africa, and Asia are essential to inform contemporary debates about and dealing with the slavery past. The fellowships aim to support this group of young professionals. Candidates are asked to write a motivation letter and a plan that includes their preference for one of the institutes in GSHF coalition and a rough idea on how they would like to spend their time in Amsterdam and what they expect from they stay. * Allard Pierson Museum/UB, Amsterdam Museum, The Black Archives, IISG, NiNsee, Rijksmuseum, Stadsarchief Amsterdam, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Wereldmuseum
