We teamed up with Minalba Brasil to help remedy a prevalent yet complex issue in the visually impaired community: reading can labels. Together, we created an aluminum can with a braille-embossed lid that helps individuals with visual impairments know what they’re grabbing from the cooler. We’re thrilled to share that our braille-embossed lid won the Best Design in Latin America as part of Fast Company’s 2024 Innovation by Design Awards! As the first in the Brazilian market, our braille-embossed lid offers two options: water (agua) and sparkling water (agua gas). This was a difficult undertaking, as can lids are circular, which can prove confusing for languages like braille, which are read left to right. Being precise with the size of dots and distance between dots was crucial to relaying the correct message for readers. We worked with the Fundação Dorina Nowill para Cegos (the Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind), an expert organization in Brazil, to ensure that our braille-embossed lid follows the standards for braille in terms of legibility. The 2024 Innovation by Design Awards, hosted by the leading business media outlet Fast Company, celebrates designers and businesses who are addressing today's most pressing challenges and anticipating tomorrow's critical issues. The Best Design entries were judged on functionality, originality, beauty, sustainability, user insight, cultural impact, and business impact. We believe this innovation can help improve the drinking experience for visually impaired individuals and spur more progress in can design. Our summer interns recently joined our Colorado team for a week dedicated to professional development, networking, and engaging activities. We have loved witnessing their growth in sustainability knowledge and the exploration of their potential career paths. With only three weeks remaining in their internships, we will miss their presence and contributions to our teams across the U.S.!

In collaboration with Ball Corporation and other sustainability leaders, the U.S. Aerosol Recycling Initiative’s white paper has officially been released, and we're excited to share some of the highlights:    Over half of consumers are unsure if aerosols can be recycled or believe they are non-recyclable. However, most aerosol cans have minimal leftover product, making them suitable for recycling.    Recycling one aerosol product can reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to driving 0.5 miles or charging 13 smartphones.     A 50% recycling rate would save energy comparable to the use of nearly 48,000 homes annually.    These are just a few reasons it’s crucial we improve the efficiency and effectiveness of recycling initiatives globally, and why we’re working toward our 2030 and 2050 sustainability goals, which you can read on our website.     Check out the full white paper, in collaboration with Can Manufacturers Institute and Household & Commercial Products Association, at https://bit.ly/3Qm7cGD and more about our work at https://lnkd.in/gwsdXZ49.

Building on our progress with the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI), by the end of 2023, 100% of our rolling mill suppliers were ASI members!  What does this mean? From mining and re-melting, to casting, rolling, can manufacturing and filling, we are committed to upholding the highest environmental, social and ethical standards during every step of the product manufacturing process. But, there’s still work left to be done, and we’re excited to continue making progress against ASI’s sourcing standards. Thanks to its onsite solar energy farm – the largest in California at 42,577 square feet – our Fairfield, CA plant has been recognized as a leader in sustainable engineering. The solar energy farm reduces our carbon footprint and helps in achieving our specific goals of reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and improving energy efficiency 30% by 2030, as mapped out in our 2030 Sustainability Goals. We’re honored to be included in Ceres’ list of exemplary Climate Transition Action Plans.
