With the expansion, we are officially a sensory-inclusive-certified venue! Working with KultureCity, an Alabama-based non-profit organization, we constructed two state-of-the-art sensory rooms and stocked our venue with sensory bags and tools. Rooms are equipped with various audio and visual panels and specialized bean bags for seating. Through their specialized design, the sensory rooms can be used by people of all ages. Sensory rooms and bags are just one of several planned initiatives in integrating inclusive features throughout our expanded spaces.

“This opportunity truly is changing our organization and our path forward,” states Kelly Backes, board president of the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin. The Autism Society SE WI were the recipients of the first-ever Baird Center Gala Giveaway. On June 15, 2024, ASSEW hosted the Reimagine Gala in the Baird Ballroom. Along with some help from Levy Restaurants, our food and beverage partner, and CTI, our A/V team, the team at ASSEW got to work planning their biggest gala yet. Previously, ASSEW’s gala drew in about 220 people. As part of their winnings, ASSEW was able to welcome 460 guests free of charge at their gala this year, allowing for more people to attend. Hosting ASSEW was a great opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring our guests feel welcome and safe. In addition to the two permanent sensory rooms located in the north building, the gala featured a larger, custom sensory room designed specifically to meet the ASSEW’s gala needs. Great Water, an art piece made from thousands of pieces of wood cut into intricate abstract shapes, is part of the We Energies Foundation Art Collection at Baird Center. It was designed by artist Ben Butler. The piece is 288 inches tall and 300 inches wide and is located on the Baird Ballroom level. Learn more below. #Art #ArtCollection #ConventionCenter #Milwaukee
"The inspiration is Lake Michigan, the play of light on water and that wonderful kind of transient, ephemeral effect." - Ben Butler Upstairs on the fourth floor of Baird Center, just outside of Baird Ballroom, is Great Water. The individually carved wood pieces are configured into a jigsaw-like puzzle of panels. The panels are all made of five layers, each a different species of tree with different tones and textures, in order to create the illusion of movement and depth. Great Water is part of the We Energies Foundation Art Collection located at Baird Center. The collection has been carefully curated to portray the characteristics, culture, people and landscapes of Milwaukee and the surrounding region.
