I recently completed my internship at Azul Bio, and it's been a phenomenal experience. This internship wasn't your typical desk job; I got to dive headfirst into real-world product development. We tackled innovative solutions that required multiple iterations and trials, pushing the boundaries of product development. Throughout this journey, I had the opportunity to explore and develop my skills in various areas: 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐏𝐈 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: I delved into developing monetizable APIs with Google Earth Engine. 𝐑𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠: I further improved my rapid prototyping skills, allowing for quick experimentation and fixes on the run. 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The intersection of engineering and biotechnology became a fascinating playground as we designed solutions that seamlessly integrated both. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 & 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐬: Gaining a deeper understanding of these fields allowed me to approach engineering challenges holistically. The team is truly exceptional. They fostered a collaborative and supportive environment where everyone brought their A-game. Jake Nations, a fantastic supervisor and friend, empowered me to explore different solutions and never hesitated to explain complex concepts. Working with him has been an invaluable learning experience. Olivia Paradis played a pivotal role in simplifying the biological aspects of our projects, providing crucial context for designing well-rounded solutions. Benjamin Alva, the silent operator of the team, impressed me with his dedication and commitment to Azul Bio's mission. The entire team exuded an infectious energy and passion for climate tech. Understanding the broader scientific context (bio, chem, etc.) strengthens the development of universal solutions. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞. Learning, adapting, and re-learning is essential for continuous growth and contribution. 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞, not a roadblock. Every failed attempt is a valuable lesson that leads to better products. Thriving in a fast-paced startup environment improves multitasking, prioritization, and adaptability skills. Working within tight budgets and timelines fostered creativity and stepping outside one's comfort zone fueled immense professional growth. The value of our coral reefs cannot be overstated. They provide biodiverse habitats, enhance coastal protection and have a role to play in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and oceans, hence mitigating #climatechange. CORDAP’s executive director Carlos Duarte is clear: losing corals is a real and urgent risk. There is less than a decade left to meet our 2030 targets. The world has historically failed to deliver on the nature based targets it has set itself but the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) can’t afford follow this pattern. 🌊 There’s a rising tide of ocean innovators and it was great to see 1000OS members tell some exciting success stories during our Ocean Climate Nexus event! Here’s what was presented in Session 1 of our Ocean Catalysts in Action pitches! 🦐 Conservation International Ventures LLC told us about JALA who is enabling the sustainable intensification of shrimp farming in Indonesia through precision aquaculture, providing a digital marketplace and comprehensive technology and service package. 🐠 Ocean Impact Organisation explained Azul Bio’s promising biotech approach of building a custom probiotic to protect coral reefs from climate warming and bleaching events, as well as a marine biopolymer product for the bioplastics industry. 🌬 The Ocean Opportunity Lab, who are all about elevating female-founders, described Veer.Voyage’s inspiring vision for emission-free container shipping that now have advanced technical designs and letters of intent from offtakers eager to use their hydrogen-sail ships. 💧 Katapult Ocean described Matter.’s groundbreaking microplastics filtration technology currently applied for laundry applications but with an exciting development roadmap to stop microplastics and micropollutants from other domestic, industrial, and municipal water systems. 🦋 SWEN Capital Partners Blue Ocean outlined how NatureMetrics are improving biodiversity monitoring through their eDNA technology that enables a rapid and cost-effective mapping of local biodiversity. 🌍 And finally, OceanHub Africa told us about how they are building out the innovation ecosystem in Africa by mentoring other entrepreneur-supporting organizations to increase local network opportunities and broaden the ocean impact innovation movement.
