This year, we've been alerting CISOs and employees about ways cybercriminals are harnessing the power of AI to escalate threats. Although AI has been villainized, it offers immense power against cyber threats for those on the cutting edge of technology willing to put it to good use. Proactive Defense: Leveraging vast datasets, AI enhances the detection of anomalies and suspicious behaviors, ensuring rapid containment of threats (MIT Technology Review). Intelligent Response: AI makes incident response faster and smarter, providing security teams with actionable insights and automated responses (Microsoft Cloud). AI tools offer a dynamic shield against both known and emerging threats, significantly bolstering our defenses. On April 29th, after a four-year investigation, three major wireless carriers admitted to selling customers' location information to these 'aggregators,' who then resold it to other third-party location-based service providers. According to the FCC, "In doing so, each carrier attempted to offload its obligations to obtain customer consent onto downstream recipients of location information, which in many instances meant that no valid customer consent was obtained." The hefty fines imposed on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon amount to nearly $200 million. To mitigate the risks of unauthorized data collection, cybersecurity awareness professionals can educate their teams on the following: The importance of carefully reviewing app permissions. Understanding the potential consequences of granting access to sensitive data. Being vigilant about the apps they use on their devices, both personal and corporate-issued. Microsoft and Google release important security updates On May 14th, Microsoft released update patches to fix over 60 security holes in Windows and supported software. The updates include fixes for two "zero-day" vulnerabilities that are actively being exploited in cyber attacks. The Chrome Web browser has also patched its own zero-day vulnerability.
