Congratulations to Avesta Housing President & CEO Rebecca Hatfield, who has been appointed to a three-year term on the New England Community Development Advisory Council (CDAC) of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston! Rebecca looks forward to bringing her combined for-profit and nonprofit experience to the CDAC as it informs Boston Fed leaders and staff about New England community development activities, barriers to economic growth, and ways the bank can support regional community development. “I am honored to serve on such an important and prestigious advisory council,” Rebecca said. “The Fed is a vital and effective partner in promoting development and growth in communities throughout New England, and I am excited to have the opportunity to provide on-the-ground insight as a part of the CDAC.” Click below to read the press release. #avestahousing #affordablehousing #leadership #advocacy

We were honored to host U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen last week at River Turn, our new affordable housing property in Conway, N.H. Sen. Shaheen met with Avesta staff and officials with New Hampshire Housing to see firsthand how Avesta is delivering affordable housing to the Mount Washington Valley. “Addressing the housing crisis in New Hampshire and across the country will require innovative and collaborative solutions to develop the 60,000 units of housing New Hampshire needs by 2030,” Sen. Shaheen said. “Avesta’s River Turn Apartments in Conway are helping lead the way by continuing efforts to increase the supply of affordable and energy-efficient housing in the Granite State.” Click here to read a press release from Sen. THANK YOU to everyone who attended our grand opening celebration of Village Commons in Scarborough on Tuesday! Village Commons opened to residents in February and provides safe, quality, affordable homes for ages 55 and older. It was developed by Avesta Housing, designed by Kaplan Thompson Architects, and built by Hebert Construction, LLC. The building is part of the Firehouse Village campus, a 2.6-acre development by Firehouse Ventures LLC that combines retail, dining, and office space on the site of the town’s former public safety complex. “This effort illustrates how former public space can be transformed to help create much-needed affordable housing and promote a vibrant, accessible mixed-use community for residents and neighbors,” said Avesta Housing President & CEO Rebecca Hatfield. “It is also a testament to how collaboration can help create more affordable housing.” Also speaking at the grand opening were Jack Soley of Firehouse Ventures LLC; Mark Wiesendanger, director of development for MaineHousing; and April Sither, vice chair of the Scarborough Town Council. U.S. Sen. Angus King, I–Maine, provided a pre-recorded message. Dawn Pendergrass provided the final speech at the event, in which she shared how Avesta helped her 74-year-old father find a home after he lost his life savings to an internet scam that targeted older adults. Suddenly finding himself on an extremely limited income, he could not find an apartment that he could afford. Then Dawn got a phone call from Avesta telling her that her father had been approved for an apartment at Village Commons. “Tears streamed down my face as I signed the initial paperwork in the (Avesta) office. The stress and worry that I had been carrying for the past year began to lift,” Dawn said. “Avesta Housing saved my dad.” #avestahousing #affordablehousing #mainehousing #seniorhousing

We are proud to announce that Kennebunk Savings has received Avesta's Mission Champion Award, presented annually to an individual or organization who has made significant contributions to the promotion and provision of affordable housing. Kennebunk Savings donated 12 acres and more than half a million dollars to Avesta Housing in 2023. The donation will facilitate development of a new 70-unit affordable housing community for ages 55 and older in Kennebunk and support future phases of affordable housing in the area. Knowing the project faced a major hurdle — a town-wide ballot measure to approve zoning — bank leadership also solicited support by hosting and participating in extensive community engagement and education. Thanks to these efforts, Kennebunk was the sole Maine community where an affordable housing ballot measure passed in the March 2024 election. Please join us in thanking Kennebunk Savings for their generous donation and its work to create affordable housing for older adults.
