Australian Women In Wine acknowledges and rewards the work of women in the Australian wine community, and community leaders who champion equality and fairness for all sexes in the workplace. We seek to support and mentor women, to share experiences, to encourage and inspire and highlight, where we see it, the need for change. AWIW is an initiative of The Fabulous Ladies’ Wine Society, and is overseen by an advisory board of industry leaders. They like to get things done. So we like to call them the AWIW Action Board!     Notice how "Rural" is popping up in brands everywhere? I'm all for it. There was a time, when I couldn’t tell you about my city credentials quick enough. But a decade after moving to rural Victora, the sentiment has completely flipped and now I put my rural credentials first. I have written about the concept of ‘geographical narcissism’ – it’s the idea that metropolitan experience is more valuable than rural experience. It’s often reinforced by headquarters of companies and organisations, being based in the cities (so it’s where you go for promotion).   Then there’s its sinister ‘cousin’: “urbansplaining”. This is a term I recently came across, which encapsulates that feeling when people in the city tell you in the country, what you need. But, here comes “Brand Rural” - I've outlined my theory of the 3 driving factors which have led to this momentous and welcome change over the past decade. Read the article below. The sixth round of the Wine Tourism and Cellar Door Grant is now open and provides up to $100,000 for eligible wine producers who have their own cellar doors and are attracting visitors to wine regions. Grant applications for sales made during the 2023-24 financial year opened on August 1 2024 and will close at 5pm (ACST) on Monday 30 September 2024.     Two of Tassie wine’s brightest stars are joining Angie Bradbury on the panel for Session One! Together they’ll be discussing why Investing in Women Makes Good Business Sense and what that looks like 💪🏼 🍷 Cynthea Semmens arrived in Tasmania in 1980 as a 5 year old from San Francisco where her parents purchased a 36 acre bush block and started to plant vines on the Tamar River. Cynthea studied Wine Marketing at Roseworthy, Wine Science at Charles Sturt, and completed 7 vintages overseas before starting a winemaking position with the Hardy Wine Company in McLaren Vale. The International Biodynamics conference in Victoria changed her belief in agriculture systems and she returned to Tasmania and established her own label Beautiful Isle Wines with husband David, and sons Solomon and Aristotle. In 2018 she bought into the family business at Marions Vineyard and by 2021 gained organic and biodynamic certification and remains committed to respecting nature, reducing her footprint and truly living a wild & precious life. 🍷 Keira O'Brien is based on the scenic east coast near Freycinet National Park, where is the winemaker and general manager at Freycinet Vineyard, one of Tasmania’s oldest family owned vineyards. She established own her small Tasmanian wine label Rivulet in 2019 and has recently taken on her most challenging role to date as vigneron, developing a small vineyard near Swansea, also on the east coast of Tasmania. Keira is the winner of the 2023 Young Gun of Wine Winemakers Choice trophy and a Wine Australia Future Leader’s Alumni. We can’t wait to hear from these two! 🖇️ Are you registered yet to join us? As the founder of 5forests, I'm proud to say we've long been committed to true accessibility, not just compliance. We believe that websites should provide the same level of usability, functionality, and enjoyment to all people, regardless of their level of capability. Here's what sets us apart from other agencies: ✅ Our sites achieve independent third-party accessibility certification, providing 5forests' clients with assurance that their new site is not only ADA compliant but is a positive, inclusive experience for anyone who wants to engage with your brand. ✅ We don't rely on overlays or widgets. You’ve seen these before: the “little man in a circle” icon floating on the bottom of a website. This is an accessibility overlay. At 5forests, we don’t believe in using these, and industry experts agree with our point of view. While overlays can be convenient as a temporary measure, they are not adequate for long term compliance, they do not help real people, and they do not make your website accessible. ✅ Our designs are tested by real people using assistive technologies. Accessibility audits often rely on automated scans on your website to find what we call “low hanging fruit”. Our VP of Engineering, Michael Bourne, has not only provided dozens of accessibility fixes to top wine ecommerce platforms, benefiting hundreds of wineries, but he's also a vocal advocate for genuine accessibility: "Accessibility isn't a feature.     After holding a waitressing position for the same company, Julia Stewart’s successful career in marketing led her to become the President of Applebees. After being passed over for the role of CEO, Stewart left Applebees to become the CEO of IHOP and then acquired Applebees for $2.1 billion. In her time at what became DineEquity, she implemented a franchise-driven business model that led IHOP through 18 consecutive quarters of growth. She still sits on various boards in the food and beverage industry and has recently started her own wellness-focused organization. Talk about a success story! 💪
