This year marks over 55 years of Australia’s wool trade with China and the 60th anniversary of The Woolmark Company. Australian Wool Innovation’s China Wool Business and Cultural Exchange Program is unlocking networking and engagement opportunities for Australian woolgrowers with over 150 Chinese importers, manufacturers, and brand partners. Australia’s Ambassador to China joined Australian and Chinese industry representatives in Shanghai at the 60th anniversary dinner. The Foundation is supporting Australian industries to engage China in a calibrated and risk-informed way, so they can continue to build people-to-people linkages and benefit from opportunities with our largest trading partner. #AWI #Australianwool #woolmark

What does it mean to belong? It is unique for everyone. Advisory Board member Wesa Chau represented the Foundation at the opening of the exhibition, Home: Here and Now on now at Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG). It details Chinese Tasmanians’ reflection on their lives, culture, and heritage. While each story is different, together they tell a much greater story of a place we all call home. The Foundation is proud to support greater understanding of Australia's multicultural society, one of our national strengths. Home: Here and Now is open in the Salon Gallery at TMAG, Tue-Sun 10am-4pm until November. Admission is free. Hon Madeleine Ogilvie MP Mary Mulcahy

From Breakers to Badminton, Australia loves sport. CEO Gary Cowan was lucky to catch Australian Olympic Committee CEO Matt Carroll AM before he headed off to the Paris Olympics with team Australia. International collaboration and competition in sport is vital for the development of Australian talent, and something the Foundation has a role in supporting. We’ll all be cheering on Team Australia #AllezAUS #TeamAUS #Paris2024

Audiology collaboration between Australia and China commenced 30 years ago, when both countries established a hearing care partnership through AusAID funding in 1995. Following the success of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Expert Working Group’s visit to China in April, Macquarie University hosted a reciprocal delegation of Chinese audiologists from Shanghai No. 9 Hospital to showcase Australia’s comprehensive approach to newborn hearing screening through the world-class facilities at the Australian Hearing Hub. Key partners include Cochlear, NextSense and The Shepherd Centre Funding projects like these, the Foundation is helping further strengthen linkages and engagement between Australian and Chinese institutions to work together for better health outcomes. #australianhearinghub #macquarieuniversity #newbornhearingscreening #audiology #health

For Australia and China to better understand the impacts of climate change we must explore solutions to address drought and promote sustainable agriculture. To strengthen these agricultural practices the Foundation proudly supports the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) hosting the Climate Future & Smart Agriculture Summit at Lanzhou University in Gansu Province, China on 15 & 16 October 2024. Stakeholders with an interest in agriculture and climate change, including researchers, industry and government representatives are invited to register for the upcoming summit at this link: https://lnkd.in/g87ct6t7.

Home: Here and Now created by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) explores and celebrates the many ways Chinese descendants live and belong in Tasmania. Evidence of Chinese settlement in Tasmania can be found from the 1830s, following the arrival of nine Chinese carpenters. In the 2021 Census, 12,300 people in Tasmania reported having Chinese ancestry, making up around two per cent of the population. Foundation CEO Gary Cowan says the Chinese-Australian community brings a richness to Tasmanian – and Australian – culture that is worthy of celebration. https://lnkd.in/g-A2DEsQ

China is Australia’s biggest importer of barley and our biggest grains export market. Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) led an Australian malting barley delegation to China this week to deliver a series of technical seminars and industry meetings to 170 Chinese industry networks. Funded by the Foundation, AEGIC’s program aims to build China literacy and capability for the grains industry, supporting risk-informed engagement in Australia’s most lucrative grains export market.
Who better to talk about the benefits and quality of Australian #barley than an Australian barley grower? Thank you to Victorian farmer Simon Tickner for impressing Chinese barley customers in Shanghai with Australia's world-leading farming systems. AEGIC's China barley seminar in Shanghai closed with a stimulating panel discussion featuring Simon, GrainCorp China's David Cui, Jimmy Zhang from Malteurop China, AEGIC consultant Trevor Perryman, and AEGIC barley guru Mary Raynes. Some fascinating insights were discussed, including the increasing demand for high-end craft beers in China - well suited to premium Australian barley. What a great event, made possible by the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (NFACR) 澳中基金会 Next stop is Guangzhou for the next seminar! Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Australia last month was an important step in stabilising our relationship with China. This week the Foundation’s CEO Gary Cowan co-hosted a roundtable event with the Business Council of Australia. Australia’s Ambassador to China, Scott Dewar, shared perspectives from on the ground in China. Chief Executive of the Business Council of Australia, Bran Black, and the Hon Warwick Smith AO reflected on the Australia-China CEO Roundtable in Perth on 18 June and Premier Li Qiang’s recent official visit to Australia. People-to-people and business-to-business relationships are key to economic opportunities with China, our largest trading partner.
