  • NURSING SPOTLIGHT 🌟 “Hi, I am Melissa. I have worked at AGH for 20 years now. I started my career here as a nursing scholarship student while working on my BSN from Salisbury University. I have been working in the Emergency Department for 13 years and I am now a charge nurse in the department. When I started in 2004, I was a scholarship student, and then transitioned to nurse tech, then to a MedSurg RN in 2006. My proudest moment would be going from a nursing student to an RN, and now hitting my 20-year anniversary with AGH next month. AGH has always been known as a small community hospital and it was important to me to stay close to home and help those in my own community. Because of our size, you pretty much know everyone working around you, which is great for building collaborative relationships. Working at AGH, I have gained a multitude of knowledge about nursing and the community in which I live. I have met and worked with a variety of great people within our healthcare community over the last two decades. In the future, I am planning to get my CEN, or Certified Emergency Nurse certification. For those that may be interested in a career at AGH, I highly recommend it. We are a close-knit facility where coworkers are more like family. There is always room for growth at AGH and many different possibilities for advancement opportunities.”

  • ✨What is the #1 piece of advice you received as you journeyed toward becoming a nurse/nurse leader? ➡️Keep the patient at the center of your why and your what. I believe that serving as a nurse, at the bedside and in leadership roles, is a calling and provides an opportunity to care and comfort others in some of the most difficult moments in their life, whether as a patient or a family member. Whenever faced with a difficult situation or tough decision, I lean on that advice and consider it my north star. I believe when we do the right thing for the patients/families/purpose of the work – the other variables fall into place. ✨What inspired you to become involved with MONL and serve on the board? ➡️My inspiration to serve on the MONL Board and be involved with MONL is to have a regional and state impact to advance healthcare delivery and nursing innovation across the state. MONL provides an opportunity to brainstorm and innovate with a network of driven and passionate nursing leaders to tackle and support each other on tough issues facing healthcare. ✨Can you share a challenging moment or obstacle you faced in your career, and how you overcame it? ➡️The nursing workforce shortages during COVID and post-COVID have been the most challenging obstacles to face in my career. During the pandemic, as a leader in quality/safety, my focus not only included jumping back to the bedside to help staff during the shortage, but also leading and guiding a workforce to maintain patient safety and staff safety. The moral distress experienced by colleagues was only overcome by staying true to the calling and leaning on the support of each other. As a nursing leader coming out of the COVID environment, the workforce shortages are a constant struggle, but working with innovative care delivery models and continuing to work with partners to build the pipeline has provided both immediate solutions to help our nursing teams as well as long term plans that see solutions to the workforce issues that we face. As a leader, when you are working towards a solution or have a sense of hope, and lead your team with that sense of hope with short and long-term solutions, you are overcoming the challenges and making a difference --- to patients, families, and the profession that we serve. #MONL #NursingLeadership

  • NURSING SPOTLIGHT 🌟 “Hi, I am Filomena. I have been with AGH since July 15, 1998 – 26 years now! I consider AGH my “second home.” Currently, I am a charge nurse on nightshift on the Med/Surg unit. Other roles I have held include nurse tech, monitor tech, pharmacy tech and unit secretary. After I passed my RN exam, I started working as a bedside nurse on Med/Surg until 5 years ago when I was promoted to charge RN. I first chose to work at AGH because it was close to home. I have stayed at AGH because I have planted roots here and continue to grow! Based on previous experiences, I knew that the small community hospital was where I wanted to be. I love walking down the hallway and knowing all of the associates I pass; we are like a family. This is a feeling unique to our close-knit organization. Working at AGH I have gained so many friends, acquaintances and experiences that I cherish. I have gained so much life experience, clinical skills and nursing knowledge over the last two and half decades. My proudest moment at AGH was celebrating my 25th anniversary. I felt so proud to stand there with all of my coworkers and show them I made it this far at AGH! Another moment I am proud of is when I earned my Senior Clinical Nurse 1 on the clinical ladder. My next goal is to obtain the highest level of the clinical ladder and become a Senior Clinical Nurse 2. In addition, I hope to gain further leadership experience at AGH. At this time, I am contemplating returning to school to achieve my Masters in Nursing Education. If you are interested in joining the healthcare field, I highly recommend you join our AGH team. In this facility, you will be valued; you will have space to grow and advance your skills, and be treated with respect and dignity. If you want to work in a friendly, collaborative environment, this is the place to be.”

  • NURSING SPOTLIGHT 🌟 “Hi, I am Nancy! I have been with AGH for 9 years. I am a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit. I started my career as a Nurse Tech on the Med-Surg unit at AGH. After a year, I transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where I worked as a Secretary/Nurse Tech for four years. With some convincing from my co-workers and family, I decided to apply for the James G. Barrett Nursing Scholarship to become a nurse. By receiving this scholarship, I was able to attend Wor-Wic Community College and earn my Associate’s Degree in Nursing. I choose to work at AGH because I want to contribute to the community. I live in Berlin and enjoy the ability to care for the people here. By working at AGH, I have not only become a better nurse, but a better person. Working together with my co-workers, I have learned that we can accomplish anything. My proudest moment at AGH is graduating from nursing school in May of 2020 at what would be the beginning of a pandemic. I volunteered to go straight to the MICU to care for COVID-19 patients in critical condition. I am grateful to have had this experience. From there, I would spend the next year and a half caring for COVID-19 patients. Another moment that makes me proud of my team and myself is when we won the Team DAISY award. As for my future, I plan to continue my nursing career as an ICU RN. I am currently working on my BSN and hope to graduate in the near future. Additionally, I will continue to chair the Education Work Environment Shared Governance Council, as well as be a part of the Pathway to Excellence Steering Committee, and several other councils. I think AGH is a great place to work because of the opportunities that are available to advance your career, both personally and professionally. I have advanced up the clinical ladder, not only in my position, but also through performance improvement, professional growth, education and leadership skills.”

  • NURSING SPOTLIGHT 🌟 “Hello, I am Karen! I began working at AGH on April 21, 1993, one month prior to the hospital opening its doors 31 years ago. I woke up one day and wondered why my entire family had moved to the beach and I was still in Wilmington, DE. When I heard a new hospital was being built in Berlin, I jumped on getting my application in. The first brick had not yet been laid, but I persisted. It was the best decision I made - to start at a hospital that was wanted, needed, and built by the community. To have the opportunity to live and work here in Worcester County is such a blessing. AGH has provided me with opportunities to advance as a professional and develop invaluable relationships with talented colleagues. I am currently a Clinical Education Specialist in the Education Department. Other roles I have held at AGH include being the Nurse Residency Facilitator, PACU nurse, scrub nurse, manager, and a ‘House Supervisor.’ I have gained a deep understanding of what life-long-learning means to me, and its significance in healthcare. I am passionate about supporting nurses in the ever-changing healthcare world through online training and hands-on skills. I am extremely proud of the success of our Nurse Residency Program. We provide support to newly graduated nurses in an effort to help them transition from students to skilled bedside nurses. We not only provide education related to skills, time management, and evidence-based practice, but we offer them a safe place to express their fears, insecurities, successes and achievements. Nursing is difficult and our goal is to help develop these new nurses, increase their confidence, and let them know they are not alone. I am looking forward to seeing the positive changes that come from our journey to Pathway to Excellence. This journey emphasizes how Atlantic General focuses on nurturing its workforce and providing a positive practice environment. Here, nurses are valued members of the team and our insight and recommendations are heard. Our Shared Governance structure is strong and effective in ensuring nursing recommendations are considered. At AGH, we are a family and a team that cares. The compassion and caring that the nursing team provides is remarkable. I cannot imagine any other hospital allowing one to develop such meaningful relationships with patients and colleagues.”

  • Hi I am Krissa! I have been at Atlantic General for the last 2.5 years. My current role is Infection Prevention/Employee Health nurse. I have also assisted with HEDIS work as well as case reviews with Risk Management. I was still working remotely for an insurance provider when I had to visit AGH's Emergency Department as a patient. When I decided to go back into the clinical field of nursing, I decided to look into AGH since I received amazing treatment in the ED. I saw a job listing for Infection Prevention and Employee Health and applied, interviewed and was ecstatic when I was offered the job. After working remotely for 15 years, this has become such a fulfilling position. I love helping our patients and community and I am very proud to say I am an Atlantic General Hospital Nurse. After working out of the clinical field for so long, I have gained so much new nursing knowledge. I have gained many new friends and a love for Nursing again. My proudest moment is serving the community by helping with Flu Vaccines and working with population health at the local festivities. It is a nice feeling when locals and tourists come up to me and tell me how much they love our hospital. My future goals and plans are to continue my growth in Infection Prevention and the importance of keeping our patients and staff healthy. AGH may be small, but we are mighty! In my 40 years of nursing, I can honestly say this is such an amazing place to work! What a great place to complete such a long journey of my nursing career. Thank You AGH!

  • NURSING SPOTLIGHT 🌟 "Hi, I am Lori! I have been an LPN for the last 12 years and have been with AGH for the last 9.5 months. I am the Health Equity Advancement Resource and Transformation (HEART) Case Manager. In this role, I complete the social determinants of health screenings with the patients on the HEART list. I assist the patients by finding different resources and making referrals to local programs to help them with meeting their basic needs. I also work closely with the assigned care coordinators to assist with early intervention if there are any reported concerns. I applied for the HEART Case Manager position because I felt like it was perfect for me. I had worked in family service positions before I became a nurse, so I was familiar with referring patients to different services and finding resources. Therefore, to me, this was the best of both worlds combined in one position. After the interview with the PCMH team, I knew that this was exactly where I wanted to be. I have gained a chance to work with an amazing team that works hard to help the patients in this community. I feel that I have been blessed to have this opportunity to work with these HEART patients. I am so proud of the victories I have experienced with my patients."
