This week, our Senior Director Jorge Gastelumendi met with Governor Claudio Orrego Larraín to celebrate the appointment of Patricia Andrea Pastén Valdés as Santiago de Chile’s newest Chief Heat Officer. Governor Orrego appointed South America’s first Chief Heat Officer in March 2022, prioritizing the city’s work on climate resilience and confronting the challenge of extreme heat. Through his leadership and the expertise of the appointed Chief Heat Officers, the city has implemented and scaled heat resilience policies and solutions around the city. “It is an incredible honor to step into the position of Chief Heat Officer for Santiago, following in the footsteps of my esteemed predecessor, Cristina Huidobro," she said. Already, Patricia has focused on scaling critical nature-based solutions—like the urban greening initiative Brotar—and resilience policies. “Patricia’s extensive experience and profound understanding of the city and its inhabitants make her the perfect choice to continue advancing Santiago's status as a leader in heat action and a staunch advocate for safeguarding individuals from extreme heat,” said Jorge Gastelumendi.
