What comes to mind when you think of summer? Is it barbecue, the beach, or your favorite fair or festival? In Atlanta, another renowned tradition is recognized across the state and worldwide every July 4—the Peachtree Road Race. Founded by Georgia State University cross country coach and Dean of Men Tim Singleton, the Peachtree Road Race began on July 4, 1970. Since those first 110 participants gathered, the race has become an Independence Day tradition in Atlanta. Tap the link below to see more photos from past races, and let us know in the comments if you’re running tomorrow! https://lnkd.in/eT_x_Yqw

Juneteenth serves as a holiday to reflect on our nation's history and commemorate emancipation. It is also a time to celebrate the impact of Black culture on American society at large. In honor of Juneteenth, we invite you to our Aiken Lecture TONIGHT at 7pm, featuring Dr. Edda Fields-Black, where we'll learn the story of the Comabee River Raid, one of Harriet Tubman’s most extraordinary accomplishments. Dr. Fields-Black, who is a descendant of one of the participants in the 1863 raid—will share how Tubman commanded a ring of spies, scouts, and pilots and participated in military expeditions behind Confederate lines. Tickets are still available at the link below! https://lnkd.in/eQit3pAy The Aiken Lecture Series is supported by the Lucy Rucker Aiken Foundation.

It was such a pleasure to host Doris Kearns Goodwin at Atlanta History Center, in conversation with the incomparable Valerie Jackson, for her newest book, An Unfinished Love Story. Doris's expertise as a historian is matched by her baseball fandom and we are delighted she had the opportunity to tour our newest exhibit, More Than Brave: The Life of Henry Aaron.   If you weren’t able to attend, you might have missed the chance to see Doris, but you haven’t missed out on More Than Brave: The Life of Henry Aaron, on view now at Atlanta History Center.
