About us
The Asset Funders Network (AFN) is the leading national grantmaker membership organization focused on advancing equitable wealth building and economic mobility. AFN brings key stakeholders together with its network of grantmakers—private, public, corporate, health, and community foundations; public-sector funders; and financial institutions—to invest in policies, programs, and financial products as tools for confronting inequity. AFN provides valuable opportunities to learn and connect through programming and peer networking as well as issue based briefs with key data and actionable recommendations. In addition to the national programming, AFN supports 10 regional chapters and coordinates or partners in a variety of place-based efforts across the country where funders come together to learn and collaborate on issues of local importance and priority. Here's what we know: Surviving is not thriving. ALICE, encompassing early education workers, laborers and movers, home health aides, heavy truck drivers, store clerks, repair workers, and office assistants - are often the most essential workers in our community, yet among the most financially vulnerable. They live paycheck to paycheck, forced to make impossible choices: pay the rent or buy food, receive medical care or pay for childcare, pay utility bills or put gas in the car. In a significant community conversation on 102.5 FM, host LaGanzie Kale spoke about the mental health challenges ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) populations face in Northeast Arkansas. Joined by Kenya Ward, LCSW, the discussion highlighted the unique struggles and mental health implications for these hardworking yet financially strained individuals. Did you miss our June webinar Supporting Postsecondary Credentials Without Debt? Take a look at the replay and view the presentation here: https://loom.ly/npP2fls Student loan debt affects millions of people and creates a significant barrier to financial security. Borrowers of color and women experience the most negative impact. Though this is a multi-faceted issue, #philanthropy has a vital role to play to support students both systemically and directly. Not all #funders prioritize the same mechanisms when it comes to reducing student debt. It takes a continuum of interventions to reduce existing debt and limit future debt for students. The U.S. economic system advantages some and disadvantages many. In particular, African-Americans, Latinos, and women have faced historic, embedded discrimination —reinforced by institutional policies. This has created and sustained wealth inequality. For women, the #wealthgap has been largely overlooked in discussions of women’s economic security. These gaps, compounded by injustices in our tax system, impact the next generation. Take a look at AFN's library of information, including briefs and webinar playbacks which help #funders further understand the wealth gap and build assets for low and middle income families by finding ways to provide opportunity across race and gender.
