✨Monthly AIA Spotlight✨ Meet Josephine Zhu, Director, Marketing Strategy at NBCUniversal Josephine was recently featured in ADWEEK, highlighted as a marketer by day and an artist by night. She launched her brand, Zhuology Ceramics, creating Asian-inspired ceramics that honor her Chinese-American roots. ADWEEK: https://lnkd.in/g9AvBXew How has being Asian affected your career? Growing up with immigrant parents, I was in a household that discouraged creative pursuits, favoring careers that prioritized financial and career stability. Art was often seen as frivolous and impractical. Now, established in marketing and advertising, I’ve realized the importance of pursuing projects that fulfill you both creatively and professionally. I am proud of my AAPI roots and strive to incorporate that message into all my endeavors, showing others they can do the same. Do you have any advice for the AAPI community? Show up as your authentic self, both at work and outside. Success is multi-dimensional, and you can redefine what it means for you, even if it goes against what you were taught or raised to believe. Define your terms for happiness and success, and have the courage to pursue them fearlessly! 🔖 Get featured! https://lnkd.in/gTVAhKRS #monthlyspotlight #apicommunity

Why is advertising still so white? Thank you, The New York Times Stefanos Chen, for highlighting the ongoing lack of diversity in the advertising industry and its impact on the work produced 💼 ✨ Being the only person of color in most creative rooms can be not only lonely but also uncomfortable. I recall a meeting where my agency founder incorrectly told the client that I understood the audience in China simply because of my background. “You’re being looked at as the monolith for your community, and that’s a very heavy burden to hold” - Nate Nichols, Palette Group In 2021, white executives owned or ran approximately 75% of advertising agencies; by 2022, this figure increased to 90%. Additionally, 64% of Black employees had spent two years or less at their current agency, the shortest tenure among all racial or ethnic groups. Industry experts attribute this to the lack of career growth opportunities and exposure for people of color. As Joel Rodriguez from Translation states, "Hiring people from varied backgrounds is crucial to the industry’s growth."

Closing out the end of AANHPI heritage month with the sold out Asian American Marketing Mixer, in partnership with Nielsen AAF American Advertising Federation IW Group Inc. 🌟 incredible takeaways from the conversation with Chris Degenaars Patricia Ratulangi Sarah May Bates Raghu Alla Vivi Nguyen-Lehner 🔍 Pandering vs. Authenticity: We dove deep into dissecting the intention behind messaging, emphasizing the importance of connecting authentically with our audience. 🤝 Building Trust and Loyalty: It’s not just about one-off interactions; it’s about building year-round trust and consistency within communities for long-term loyalty. 🌏 Navigating Cultural Nuances: Understanding the cultural differences within our teams and communities is crucial. Educating ourselves and raising awareness about these nuances empower us to connect more effectively. 🚀 Thinking Beyond the Brief: We encourage thinking beyond the mainstream, going above and beyond just checking the box. Let’s strive for greatness and innovation in everything we do! 💪 Being Brave and Accountable: It’s essential to expect more from ourselves and each other. Let’s be brave, call out what needs to be addressed, and actively work towards inclusivity and equity. Together, let’s get into the room and bring others with us!

✨Monthly AIA Spotlight✨ Meet Hami Kim, Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications at Paris Baguette North America. How has being Asian affected your career? I was raised in a town with very few Asians, but was extremely lucky to grow up with a huge extended family. Our frequent gatherings were always centered around plates and plates of Korean food. Being exposed to things like jellyfish salad and pig’s feet at a young age has taught me to try anything once, and it’s ok if you never want to eat it again. I was (and still am) a picky eater, but food has always invoked a sense of comfort, community, and delight. Even though it took me a while to get to where I am, I am so thrilled to have a career involving food that makes people happy. Advice for the AAPI community? Be kind because you never know what someone else might be going through. Voice your opinions, even when they’re different. And yes, you should get dessert. 🔖 Tag a person you think should be featured! #monthlyspotlight #apicommunity
