As the Acting Director of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Water Power Technologies Office, I’m thrilled to announce that we have launched a groundbreaking funding opportunity of up to $112.5 million—the largest investment in marine energy to date! This five-year initiative will significantly accelerate the design, fabrication, and testing of wave energy converters (WECs), allowing us to harness the incredible potential of ocean waves for clean, reliable energy. With the potential to generate approximately 34% of all domestic power, wave energy is crucial for our renewable energy future. U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm highlighted how this funding will empower American developers to advance technologies that deliver locally sourced energy to millions. This opportunity focuses on three technology development pathways for marine energy: 1) Support for at-sea applications like ocean observation and aquaculture. 2) Solutions for remote and coastal communities needs. 3) Innovations for grid scale and utility energy generation. As if this wasn’t exciting enough, this opportunity will also help build up the testing pipeline for U.S. marine energy test infrastructure, including at PacWave South, the first pre-permitted grid-connected facility for wave energy in the continental U.S., becoming operational next year. I invite you to join us on this exciting journey! Don’t miss the informational webinar on October 9, 2024, and be sure to submit your concept papers by October 25, 2024.
