Honoring World Bread Day: Insights from Moses Isik, CEO of Bake My Day In connection with International Bread Day, we spoke with Moses Isik, CEO of Bake My Day, one of the largest bakeries in Greater Stockholm area, Sweden, and part of the Applied Value Group. Here he shares his thoughts on the significance of bread and a special meeting in Kiambu, Kenya. Moses – what does bread mean to you? For me, bread means community and tradition. It is something we humans gather around, break together, and share in both everyday life and celebrations. In addition to its unifying power, bread nourishes and employs millions of people around the world. At Bake My Day, we deliver between 20 and 25 tons of bread daily and create employment for 320 people. Bread is not just a product; it is a tool to unite and provide. Is there anything you would like to highlight today on International Bread Day? Today I am particularly proud of our long-term partnership with Hand in Hand Sweden, where bread plays a central role. Through training and support, Hand in Hand helps people start and run small businesses, many in the bakery industry. Thanks to Hand in Hand's work, millions of people in some of the world's most vulnerable areas can create a brighter future for themselves and their families through self-employment and a stable income. I am also reminded of a memorable moment when I visited Hand in Hand's operations in Kenya last year. In Kiambu, just outside Nairobi, I visited the Peniel Center, a vocational training site supported by Hand in Hand that provides young people with professional skills in the bakery industry. The area has a history of high unemployment, school dropouts and crime, but the center has become a place of hope and development. That's where I met Jane Njeri, 22, who told me how the center has changed not only the whole area, but also her own life. When she started, she barely knew how to boil an egg, but after completing the center's training, she can now bake multi-story cakes, and she receives regular orders from customers in the area. And that barely cooked egg, she can now poach it or turn it into a fluffy omelet! With the continued support of the Center and Hand in Hand, she plans to open her very own bakery and build her own future in a now safe neighborhood. Finally, Moses - do you have a favorite bread? At the moment I would say I have two favorites. Bake My Day's new sourdough bread, which is baked using a new, more advanced technique to create an even more moist and delicious result. The bread has a mild acidity that is balanced by a rich, nutty note from the flour. On November 10th, we gathered friends and family, business leaders, and philanthropists to address global poverty as we organized the 7th Annual Let’s Give Back Gala at Grand Hôtel in Stockholm, Sweden.    All funds that were pledged during the evening will benefit our longstanding partner – Hand in Hand – and will help women beat the odds and succeed as entrepreneurs in communities across Afghanistan, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. This year, we were delighted to have three guests from Hand in Hand Eastern Africa's operations in Kenya – Albert Wambugu (CEO), Daisy Were (trainer), and Lydia Ngendo Nyota (serial entrepreneur).
