From our friends at the Water Hub, an incredible new resource for a #JustInfrastructure. Flood prevention efforts are getting a boost through #BIL dollars. In Gulfport, MS, Turkey Creek weaves through a community rich in history. First settled by emancipated African Americans, the neighborhood was substantially damaged by Hurricane Katrina, leaving lasting flooding challenges in its wake. Now with new federal funding, the Education, Economics, Environmental, Climate and Health Organization (EEECHO) will educate residents on flood risks, restore wetlands along the creek, and install flood prevention infrastructure like bioswales and rain gardens. The strength of communities is truly inspiring, and nowhere is this more evident than in the face of environmental adversity. Today, we want to share a story that showcases the power of a single individual when guided by determination and a relentless will to change. Meet Jacqueline Jones, a woman from Reidsville, Georgia. Despite limited resources, she fought against the environmental threats affecting her rural community. Her story, penned by our talented staff journalist Dorothy Terry, is a testament to what is possible when ordinary people step up to make extraordinary changes. Communities like Reidsville are often overlooked, left grappling with environmental threats such as repetitive flooding with limited financial and technical resources. But a lack of resources doesn't equate to a lack of resolve, as we've found. It's not the resources, but the people, that make the difference. Harriet Festing, executive director of our organization that represents 250 environmental advocacy groups, puts it best: “It’s always challenging to work in rural communities...But when you have a natural leader like Jackie Jones, anything is possible.” We should remember that every Jackie Jones's story holds the power to inspire thousands more to act. Did you know that "the number of repeatedly flooded properties has eclipsed 46,000?" “Our experience is if your home keeps flooding, it’s a miserable, horrible situation,” said Harriet Festing, executive director of the Anthropocene Alliance, a coalition of front-line communities experiencing the impacts of extreme weather. "And there’s going to continue to be more flooding with climate change and development standards that facilitate building in floodplains.” #repetitiveflooding #climatechange #climateaction

An important story published today by The Associated Press, authored by Michael Phillis and Camille Fassett, illustrates the complex issues around relocating communities experiencing flooding. A2 and member Rosewood Strong from SC #inthenews. "'One resident who endured repeated flooding said it 'makes you sick' with worry whenever it storms and rips away your sense of security. Terri Straka decided to move from the area but had a hard time convincing her parents to do the same. Eventually, she brought them to a house for sale and said it could be their dream home. They reluctantly agreed to move. 'Them being able to visualize what a future might look like is absolutely critical to people being able to move. They have to imagine a place and it needs to be a real place that they can afford,' said Harriet Festing, executive director of Anthropocene Alliance that supports communities like Socastee hit by disaster and climate change."
