🚨 Breaking: Google CEO Sundar Pichai eyes electricity from nuclear plants for its data centers reported by The Hill. "For the first time in our history, we have this one piece of underlying technology which cuts across everything we do today," Pichai said of generative AI. I think the opportunity to do well here is something we are leaning into. We are now looking at additional investments, be it solar, and evaluating technologies like small modular nuclear reactors, etc." ☢️ The nuclear renaissance continues.

The U.S. has finalized its $1.52 billion loan to help Holtec International reopen the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan. The funding is part of broader efforts to revive nuclear energy as a reliable, low-carbon energy source amidst the nation's shift towards cleaner energy solutions. The plant is expected to reopen late 2025, but a Biden official indicated it may take two years to reopen the plant, pushing the reopening date to 2026. Read more at  https://lnkd.in/g-fBSkyx

On September 20th, Microsoft announced a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy to buy nuclear power from Three Mile Island’s Unit 1 once it’s reopened. As clean energy demand grows, experts consider the logistics, safety, and the potential of using old sites for advanced reactors where refurbishing existing ones may not be possible. ❗ "Political will is not enough!" ❗ That's what Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch said at NYC Climate Week 🌍, and Sweden is proving it! By 2026, they’ll begin building a new nuclear reactor, with small modular reactors (SMRs) on the horizon. Currently, nuclear energy powers 30% of Sweden’s electricity ⚡️, but the government has ambitious plans to ramp this up to meet the demand of an electrified future. This is more than a strategy—it’s action, with nuclear leading the charge for sustainability and energy security. 🔋 With the government’s backing, Sweden is setting an example for the world by investing in clean, reliable energy sources. Michigan is actively working on reopening the Palisades nuclear power plant—an initiative that could set a new precedent for the nuclear industry nationwide. The federal government is stepping in with a $1.5 billion loan to Holtec International to restart the plant, while Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has included $150 million for the project in the state’s latest proposed budget.  Before its closure in May 2022, Palisades produced 800 megawatts of electricity—enough to power 800,000 homes. Over its operational lifetime, the plant helped avoid millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions, significantly contributing to the fight against climate change. Upon reopening, Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is anticipated to avoid 4.47 million tons of CO2 emissions annually by providing carbon-free electricity, or 111 million tons of CO2 over the next 25 years of operation. This is equivalent to taking over 950,000 gas-powered cars off the road each year or over 23 million cars over 25 years. The plant could be reopened as early as 2025 and pave the way for other plants to reopen. In fact, Constellation has entered a 20-year purchase agreement with Microsoft to reopen Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island reactor Unit 1 (not to be confused with the infamous Unit 2), and Iowa is considering reopening the shuttered Duane Arnold plant. And earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a report revealing that over 60 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity could be added to existing and recently retired nuclear plant sites across the United States, bringing the possibility of more reopened plants closer to reality. As the world faces the urgent challenge of climate change, the reopening of Palisades is a symbol of what's possible when innovation meets determination. May it be the first of many as the world strives to restore our climate.

⚛️📑 Paperwork is harder than physics in US #nuclear. Annual license submission-approval throughout must rip open by 25x to meet the “Triple Nuclear by 2050” mandates. (Nuclear Liftoff report) 25x throughput requires disruptive improvement in timeline and process; can’t happen with a 10% headcount or budget increase. #AI, language & physics models, can accelerate precedent research, identify reg gaps, improve scientific reasoning, and enhance the safety of reactors and sites. Everstar is rapidly building this vision. Tight collaboration already under way btwn industry and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to actualize this plan. Just wrapped up an incredible few days in NYC and now back in Zurich to continue our work at Deep Atomic. Once again, I’m blown away by the collaborative spirit in the nuclear industry—everyone is eager to build together, and that energy is inspiring. It was also great to finally meet Ryan Pickering in person after following his journey for a while. Huge thanks to my fellow panelists Kevin Kong (Founder & CEO, Everstar), Madhumitha Ravichandran (CEO & Co-Founder, N-ERGY), Brooke Daniels (Partner, Pillsbury), and Julie Kozeracki (Director of Strategy, US Department of Energy Loan Programs Office) for moderating. It was a pleasure diving into discussions with all of you and learning more about your work. I have no doubt we’ll be collaborating for years to come. Now, it’s time to refocus on Deep Atomic, where we’re making big strides in our mission to power the future of computing with clean, reliable energy. Exciting things ahead!
