Why does flow matter? Unlike hemodynamics (e.g., EOA, MPG), flow dynamics look at blood flow patterns. Together, these parameters can provide a more holistic perspective on TAVR valve performance. Commercially available TAVR valves produce abnormal blood flow patterns (e.g., increased eccentricity, vorticity, and flow reversal), which may impact LV function.*
Two CMR metrics are being used to assess blood flow patterns before and after a TAVR procedure.
⭐ Flow Displacement (FD): Distance from the center of the ascending aorta to the highest jet velocity divided by the ascending aorta diameter** (A higher value suggests non-laminar flow.)
⭐ Flow Reversal Ratio (FRR): Systolic backward flow divided by forward flow** (A higher value suggests non-laminar flow.)

A new class (biomimetic) of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has emerged that is designed to do more for patients. The #biomimetic valve is designed to mimic the function and physiology of a healthy native aortic valve and is intended to restore natural blood flow patterns and cardiac efficiency. The patented biomimetic TAVR valve has demonstrated excellent hemodynamics and laminar flow with CMR in the US EFS study. (1)
