There was nothing more that could be done. Despite all the best efforts of a highly skilled team equipped with advanced tools, a baby carried to term died after being born recently. The mother, as might be expected, was utterly heartbroken. The entire family grieved in agony. Melissa, a nurse in our labor and delivery department, took it upon herself to express the team’s compassion and sympathy with a small gesture. She’d provided remarkable care for the family throughout the entire process. She’d been with the laboring mother all day. She scoured the hospital for supplies, got the baby’s fingerprint and made a memory stone that deeply touched the family. They cherished the keepsake and Melissa’s act of kindness. Along with Casey and Marcia, who work in our non-invasive cardio lab, Melissa has been named one of our Stars of the Month. Casey and Marcia sprung to action when a patient mixed up his appointment time for important tests. The patient arrived at the diagnostic center two hours late, and the center had no available time that afternoon. He was on crutches and in an orthopedic boot, so he faced an arduous task of more travel. But Casey and Marcia gave up their lunch break to perform all the tests that were necessary. The patient went on his way with appreciation for their generous assistance. If you’re interested in joining the stars on our team, visit AnMed.org/careers. #BetterStartsHere

A few things to keep in mind as we head into the Fourth of July, from Safe Kids Anderson County: - You should be sure your children learn how to swim, and be sure they retain and build on swimming-related skills year to year. - Floating or treading water for a minute is an important skill, and so is turning around in a full circle and finding an exit from the water. It’s also important that children can exit from a pool without using a ladder - Nearly a quarter of all child drownings happen during family gatherings near a pool. Stay aware. Designate an adult to be in charge of child safety. - Teach children that open-water swimming, like in Lake Hartwell, is different from swimming in a pool. There can be hazards like drop-offs, limited visibility and currents. - Wear a lifejacket. Lifejackets save lives. Stay safe this summer! Many resources are available at safekidsanderson.org. #BetterStartsHere

The cardiac step-down team on the 5 Center wing of our Medical Center won our system’s first quarterly award for positive patient experience recently after scoring in the 86th percentile nationally. They’re doing great work! “I am proud that our team treats patients and families with the care and respect they’d give their own families,” said Angel, nurse manager of the team. #BetterStartsHere

Here’s a hearty public welcome to the 17 rising senior nursing students who’ve started working with us as nurse externs. These employees are spending eight weeks in clinical areas like the emergency department, critical care, the neuro ICU, CCU, peri-op, Kids Care, mom/baby, labor and delivery, the surgical unit and our progressive cardiac unit. Nurse externs get the opportunity to partner with a registered nurse and become immersed in the clinical setting at a Magnet-recognized facility. Additional opportunities include networking, a “unit swap” to see a different clinical environment and sessions such as The Patient Experience, Wound Care and Vascular Access designed especially to support them in their nursing journey. We’re thrilled to help prepare these new teammates for their careers in nursing! #BetterStartsHere

The way that our Dr. R. Phillip Thomas goes above and beyond to care for his patients caught special attention recently. The family medicine physician at AnMed Primary Care - Cornerstone had a patient of his go to urgent care one morning because of swelling in the arm. After diagnostic testing, it was determined to have come from a superficial blood clot. Later that day, after the patient had been treated and released, the patient received a MyChart message from Dr. Thomas. The patient was so impressed that Dr. Thomas took that time and cared that much that the patient sought a way to express gratitude. Dr. Thomas went on to respond numerous times, and quickly, to answer the patient’s questions through MyChart. #BetterStartsHere because of doctors like Dr. Thomas. He’s been named our Physician of the Quarter. https://lnkd.in/dxb2ZB8i
