About us
Our Mission The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) administers programs that create domestic and international marketing opportunities for U.S. producers of food, fiber, and specialty crops. AMS also provides the agriculture industry with valuable services to ensure the quality and availability of wholesome food for consumers across the country. Nearly 4,000 AMS professionals work every day to support the country’s diverse agricultural operations, which range from individual farmers to international businesses and employ 1 in 12 people. AMS services and its millions of dollars in annual grant investments also create opportunities by supporting economic development in small towns and rural communities that stand as the backbone of American values. Much of the agency’s support for agriculture is provided through commodity-specific efforts, such as its Dairy; Specialty Crops; Livestock, Poultry and Seed; and Cotton and Tobacco Programs. AMS also oversees the National Organic Program; Science and Technology Program; and the Transportation and Marketing Program. AMS also provides regulatory oversight for over 20 research and promotion programs, and enforces other Federal regulations such as the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA) and the Seed Act. Local Meat Capacity Grant Program USDA’s Local Meat Capacity Grant program is building resilience in the meat and poultry supply chain by increasing processing capacity and promoting more competition in the sector. This provides small and mid-sized producers with more local processing options and strengthens their market potential.
-
Today USDA announced $26.9 million awarded to 33 projects through the Local Meat Capacity (Local MCap) grant program to expand processing options for the meat and poultry industry. This second set of awards through Local MCap is for both Equipment Only and Processing Expansion project types. Simplified equipment only projects fund projects from $10,000 to $250,000 to purchase processing equipment such as meat grinders, stuffers, and smokers. Processing expansion projects are eligible to receive between $100,000 and $5 million to increase processing or rendering capacity through activities such as facility upgrades, equipment purchases, and training. This grant program is targeted to support meat and poultry processors with smaller-scale projects, with a goal to increase processing availability and variety for local and regional livestock producers. https://lnkd.in/eSgZWXSJ

AMS formally published the proposed rule, Fair and Competitive Livestock and Poultry Markets, in the Federal Register on June 28. The public may submit comments until August 27, 2024. The proposed rule defines unfair practices as conduct that harms market participants and conduct that harms the market. Combined, these two categories of conduct comprehensively define the counts of “unfair practices” under the P&S Act. Additional information on the proposed rule can be found at https://bit.ly/4cNeMTq
