In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, meet Christopher Wonderly as he shares his journey into disability. "I became an amputee in 2022 after a weekend of camping went awry. After about a month in the hospital for surgery, recovery, and rehab, I returned home to my new reality. My employer, Best Buy, was very supportive both during and after my time away from work. The leave and return policies allowed me the time I needed to heal, and coworkers and leaders throughout the organization showed genuine care and support. I also benefited from working in a remote role, allowing me to return to work much sooner and easier while also accommodating my numerous medical appointments. In hearing the stories of others, my experience unfortunately seems anomalous, though one I am grateful for. I’ve since left Best Buy, and as I look for new opportunities to grow and contribute, my disability has been a constant thought in my head. What should I share with a prospective employer? What, if any, accommodations should I request (and do I even know what I really need?) Are there certain jobs I just can’t do, and how do I vet them so I don’t waste my, and the company’s, time? Even with ten years of Human Resources leadership experience engaging with accommodation, leave and return to work situations, it was as though I was engaging with these ideas (and the concept of disability as a whole) for the first time. My journey to understand the resources and partners that support the limb difference and limb loss community led me to the Amputee Coalition, where I took advantage of their workforce development program. In addition, I’ve joined their Employment Council to use my HR and leadership experience to both learn and help other organizations improve their efforts toward the limb difference/limb loss community. I continue the work to find my next company to contribute to. In addition to the normal considerations any job seeker has, the ability for me to thrive in a company that has the culture and flexibility to support me has become equally important. To that end, NDEAM is a great opportunity to build or expand upon the framework of support. And be vocal! Sharing stories and engaging in meaningful, authentic conversations reduce stigma and improve outcomes. Organizations such as the Amputee Coalition have resources that can help improve outcomes for both employees and companies through peer support, education, and advocacy. There is so much out there that is of little or no cost that can make a material difference in the quality of life for those living with limb difference or limb loss; in many cases, the investment is time and an open mind to what might be possible. I hope that NDEAM can be a catalyst for many to commit, or recommit, to those in the disability community. It will be for me as I find ways to support this community in my next role."
