#Spotted: AmeriCorps was in New Orleans, Louisiana! From meeting our members, leaders, and champions to presenting the President's Volunteer Service Awards, we had a great time celebrating the power of service. ☑️AmeriCorps board members met our members of SBP, who support disaster recovery efforts nationwide. Founded after Hurricane Katrina, SBP has helped build more than 5,000 homes after disasters so far.  ☑️AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith met our members of Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, who collect recycled oyster shells donated by local restaurants to build reefs and restore the state's eroding coastline.   ☑️AmeriCorps awarded more than $10 million in federal funding to Volunteer Louisiana. Approximately 780 AmeriCorps members will support the state's economic development, education, and conservation efforts through the funding.  ☑️AmeriCorps joined Mayor LaToya Cantrell to present the President's Volunteer Service Award to our members who made a difference in their communities through their commitment to service. AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith shares his reflection on a recent The Washington Post article, "America should make it easier for young people to serve their country": As the Washington Post editorial board noted, “People see the benefits of serving their country, whether it be through the military or helping out at their local soup kitchen. But the costs of doing so can be high.” National service is a triple win. National service strengthens communities and transforms the lives of not only the individuals served, but the members who serve while in communities across the country – urban and rural –Americans of all demographics provide on-the-ground support to critical community programs such as schools, food banks, homeless shelters, health centers, youth organizations, veterans’ facilities, and more. I've had the honor of meeting our members, volunteers, and alums from coast to coast, who have transformed their lives through service, like Heather in Las Vegas, Nevada, who was laid off from her job as a hotel housekeeper during the COVID-19 pandemic. She didn't have a high school degree and became a stay-at-home mom. Her son enrolled in the mobile pre-K center, and when she saw how beneficial it was for him, she started getting involved as a parent. She had limited options when she began looking for a job, but through the mobile pre-K, she learned about AmeriCorps and joined. She discovered a passion for teaching, and after mentioning she was interested in going back to school, her AmeriCorps site supervisor helped her get the resources and support that enabled her to obtain her GED, and today, she continues to work in classrooms. I also think of our alum David, who served with AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program in Detroit, Michigan, before finding his career as a police officer. David was studying criminal justice and psychology when he decided to join AmeriCorps because it offered a different approach to public safety. Unlike law enforcement, he was intrigued by the approach to decreasing crime by increasing public safety. Since graduating and joining the police force, David continues to mentor at-risk youth, provide them with occupational, vocational, and educational resources, and have round table discussions on character development and leadership principles every week. He credits national service as instrumental in his personal and professional development. Since 1993, AmeriCorps has been and will be committed to expanding #NationalService opportunities to transform the lives of not only our communities but also those who serve. https://lnkd.in/eBk-uzKC

Two years ago today, AmeriCorps joined the U.S. Department of Education and Everyone Graduates Center, Johns Hopkins University at The White House to launch the National Partnership for Student Success, answering President Biden's call for 250,000 more tutors and mentors to accelerate student recovery and success in our schools. Each year, more than 51,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serve in nearly 10,000 P—12 schools, and thousands more provide support to early learning and out-of-school time programs. They help students develop critical reading and math skills, create warm and welcoming environments, guide students through the college and financial aid application process, and much more to make a difference, like our older adult AmeriCorps members serving in AARP Foundation Experience Corps' Literations. To these members, tutoring students isn't just about helping them learn to read but creating connections to provide trusted support and build confidence in students. These members dedicate their time after retirement to rally behind our students and ensure they are set up to thrive. During NPSS' second anniversary and AmeriCorps' 30th anniversary, we thank the hundreds of thousands of Americans who choose to serve and transform the lives of our students and families every day. Read more: Bit.ly/4cLLdBS #Education #NationalService #Volunteerism
