Last week T&M’s summer interns participated in a beach clean-up volunteer event in Sandy Hook, NJ with the American Littoral Society. #volunteer
The American Littoral Society promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat, protects the coast from harm, and empowers others to do the same. Since 1961 we have empowered people to care for the coast through advocacy, conservation, and education. We not only provide a voice for the coast, but also give concerned citizens the knowledge and tools they need to raise their voices with us. When we restore habitat, our objective is not only to restore a dune or rebuild an oyster reef, but also to motivate people to invest “sweat equity” into a piece of the coast, take ownership and become committed stewards. When we educate, we don’t merely provide books, CDs, or handouts. We lead students young and old into the water to get their feet wet and their hands muddy. Sitting at a computer or reading a book, people may develop an interest in the coast; standing knee deep in sea foam with sand between their toes, they will develop a passion for the coast.

Our program aims to collect data in partnership with US Fish and Wildlife Service to help support the recovery & protection of HSC in Delaware Bay - where they are a keystone species, particularly critical to the threatened red knot and other migratory shorebirds. The community science approach engages the public, raises awareness & fosters new stewards.
Great night tagging horseshoe crabs with the Littoral Society!

I had such an amazing experiece learning about this wonderful species that I know so little about. I had no idea they live 20-30 years and have been around since the dinosaurs! The American Littoral Society has noticed much higher populations in the Delaware Bay (thousands) than along the NJ coast (hundreds). This type of tracking will provide data on horseshoe crab movements to help identify critical beaches used for breeding. This science could then help land developers and managers with future preservation and restoration efforts. Thanks Jessica Druze, WPIT for introducing me to the American Littoral Society. They are doing some great work out there learning, educating, and protecting wildlife.
As ecologists, helping to preserve habitats and species is an important part of what we do and volunteer work is one of the many ways we dedicate ourselves to improving the world around us! And who doesn't like getting up close and personal with some horseshoe crabs? 🐴👟🦀 In celebration of International Horseshoe Crab Day, we'd like to shout out coastal ecologists, Jessica Druze, WPIT and Ryan Morrison, and landscape architect Kathleen Haas PLA, ASLA, for their recent volunteer work tagging and photographing horseshoe crabs in Neptune, New Jersey as part of a monitoring effort with the American Littoral Society. We love to see our team giving back to the community and dedicating their time to protecting important creatures like these! 💡 Creature Fact: Horseshoe crabs are not crustaceans but actually chelicerates, closely related to arachnids such as spiders and scorpions! #horseshoecrab #conservation #speciesconservation #coastalconservation #volunteerwork #employeeappreciation #ecology #environmentalconsulting #marinebiology #environmentaljobs

Today I joined colleagues from the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, NYC Department of City Planning, CONEY ISLAND BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT, American Littoral Society and community members for a tour of Coney Island Creek Park in honor of the 7th annual ‘520 Miles of Waterfront’ event which celebrates work that enhances sustainability, resiliency, and the health of NYC’s waterfront. I shared details about our Resilient Schools and Communities (RiSC) program’s beach grass plantings that NYC Department of Education students, teachers, and Coney Island residents have been undertaking at the Park since 2021 and the important role the grasses play in stabilizing the sand, combating erosion and coastal flooding. Pamela Pettyjohn reminded everyone that engaging local residents is critical when developing community resiliency plans since they know best where remedies and resources are needed. Tour participants cleaned the beach. The grasses that were planted in March and April are growing beautifully!
