Did you know that in the United States, Black and Latino children with asthma are more likely than white children with asthma to require emergency department visits or hospitalizations because of an asthma exacerbation? Today we published a new report that provides practical frameworks to begin the research necessary to make real progress in treating asthma in Black and Latino children. Journal - Annals of the American Thoracic Society Report - Research Priorities in Pediatric Asthma Morbidity: Addressing the Impacts of Systemic Racism on Children with Asthma in the United States Type - Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report Report Link - https://lnkd.in/eJBFRz_f. “Although many studies show that exposure to determinants of health, such as housing, neighborhood violence, limited access to care, and poor air quality, largely explain these disparities, few studies have evaluated the impact of racism and the resulting creation of racialized structures and systems as the root cause of the different level of exposure to these factors,” said Monica Federico, MD, a co-chair of the committee that authored the report. “We wanted to support this work with guidelines for that research from national and international experts in research and in addressing racism in health.”

#MembershipMonday: Sharing the good news that ATS member Mary Rice, MD, MPH, has been officially appointed to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC): https://lnkd.in/eEnQsczR. Committee members are outside experts who provide EPA input on the standard setting process for criteria pollutants, such as ozone and particulate matter. While CASAC does not actually set exposure levels under the Clean Air Act, it does have significant influence on EPA standard setting process. ATS nominated Dr. Rice, along with other ATS members, for service on CASAC. Dr. Rice is one of several ATS members who have served on CASAC. ATS member Mark Frampton, MD, is rotating off CASAC after serving two terms on the panel.
