Bering Sea Alaska pollock is a vital source of affordable, nutritious protein for millions of Americans through programs like the USDA National School Lunch Program. And, when possible, food-grade bycatch from the pollock fishery is donated to SeaShare, a national non-profit that helps provide nutrient-dense seafood to hunger relief programs and food banks in Alaska and nationwide. Programs like these underscore our members’ commitment to feeding America and the world with purpose. #NationalSchoolLunchProgram

Protecting Ocean Habitats for Future Generations 🌊 Since the 1996 updates to the Magnuson-Stevens Act, fishery managers have prioritized habitat conservation. Thanks to the collaboration between Regional Fishery Management Councils, the fishing industry, and stakeholders, over 800 million acres of ocean habitat have been protected. We strongly support efforts that ensure sustainable fisheries and a healthy ocean environment for generations to come.

Leading the Way in Bycatch Minimization Federal fisheries policy aims to reduce bycatch as much as possible, and the Eastern Bering Sea Alaska pollock fishery is no exception. Thanks to innovative strategies and science-led approaches, our fishery is recognized as one of the most advanced in the world regarding bycatch reduction, as highlighted in the recent Government Accountability Office report: https://bit.ly/3AhDvBH The Magnuson-Stevens Act encourages these efforts, and we’re proud to work with NOAA Fisheries and other stakeholders to continue improving our fishing methods and maintain our high standards.

The World’s Most Transparent Fishery Federal policy has made the Eastern Bering Sea Alaska pollock fishery a global leader in transparency and accountability. From the open decision-making of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to research data and the work of independent observers on vessels and shoreside monitors, commercial pollock fishing operations are made available for all stakeholders, including the public.
