VISION: To be the foremost champion of geography for the benefit of society.

About us

Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society (AGS) is the oldest professional geographical organization in the United States. It is recognized world-wide as a pioneer in geographical research and education in Geography for over 170 years. The mission of AGS is to advance geographic knowledge and the recognition of its importance in the contemporary world. AGS promotes the use of geography in business, government, science, and education with a goal to enhance the nation’s geographic literacy so as to engender sound public policy, national security, and human well-being worldwide. AGS is the only organization focused on bringing together academics, business people, those who influence public policy (including leaders in local, state and federal government, not-for-profit organizations and the media), and the general public for the express purpose of furthering the understanding of the role of geography in our lives. AGS provides leadership to frame the national discussion of the growing importance of geography and geo-spatial tools. The Society maintains its headquarters in New York, New York.

  • What if #farming, one of the oldest professions, got an update?  In our most recent EthicalGEO blog, Scholar-Intern Joy Ndamukunda looks into #agrotech innovations in India. Precision #agriculture is farming that uses technology, such as #GIS, #GPS, #satellite imagery, automation, and more, rather than solely traditional farming methods. By doing this, precision farming enhances #sustainability by allowing a more efficient use of land, water, fuel, fertilizer, and pesticides. Precision farmers employ fewer resources to produce more, which lowers costs and has a positive #environmental impact. 🎉 In 2024, a record number of students took the APHG Exam! 🎉 AGS is very proud to be a supporter of #APHG Teachers throughout the year. We congratulate all teachers and students for leading the way in #geography! 📝 Here is a note from the Chief Reader of the AP Human Geography Exam, Dr. Lisa Benton-Short, on a record number of high school student participants: In 2024, some 261,500 high school students took the Advanced Placement Human Geography Exam. More than 55% of students will earn college credit for demonstrating that they learned the material covered in most college-level introductory Human Geography classes. AP Human Geography remains one of the fastest growing AP courses, increasing five-fold over the past 10 years. It is one of the 10 highest enrolled of all AP subjects. The growing number of students taking the course and their success on the APHG exam is a result of the high quality of teaching by APHG teachers. The AGS Geography Educators Initiative has provided crucial support for APHG Teachers. Through the AGS Teachers Fellows program, AP Human Geography teachers have opportunities to learn more in-depth course content, by attending the Geo2050 conference. In addition, AGS continues to provide resources that teachers use in the classroom, such as DailyGeo. The GeoBoost micro-grant program has funded numerous teachers to purchase important resources for students, including textbooks, drones, video call equipment, and to take field trips, all of which enhance student learning and engagement with Geography. In 2025, APHG will celebrate its 25th year of the exam--and we expect to break another record number of students taking the exam! Stay up to date with #teacher-specific opportunities and resources with our Geography #Educator Initiative newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gH_XXF_Y Consider subscribing to our DailyGeo newsletter, a short, digital news blast highlighting the ubiquitous nature of geography’s role in headline stories, delivered straight to your inbox Monday through Friday: https://lnkd.in/dM8bCzR5 #APHG #Geography #APHumanGeography #CollegeBoard #GeographyTeacher #Geospatial #Geographer #Maps #GIS #Mapping #SecondaryEducation

Our latest Company Spotlight by Scholar-Intern Chiara Ryals features David Carttar, Senior Director of Geospatial Development at Moody's RMS. His biggest advice? Learning to code. "Coding not only automates analyses, allowing for the creation of more complex models than manual methods could achieve, but it also bridges communication gaps, facilitating enhanced collaboration between geographers and programmers." In an era of rapidly changing environmental conditions, understanding and predicting catastrophic events is more crucial than ever. By maintaining an accurate global base map covering a vast array of natural hazards, Moody’s RMS ensures companies can measure their risk against anything from forest fires to pandemic illness. • #DailyGeo Feature: Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) has confirmed that the Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event is underway. Originating in the Caribbean during the summer of 2023, the mass bleaching has now spread across each major ocean basin in the southern hemisphere. This is the second instance of global coral bleaching in the last decade, with the previous event, lasting from 2014 to 2017, being the longest and most widespread coral bleaching event on record. Such events occur during extended periods of elevated ocean temperatures when corals expel algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn white. In this state, corals are susceptible to starving or disease, putting entire ecosystems at risk. Reports from NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program emphasize the need for coral reef management and restoration as climate models predict bleaching will increase in both frequency and magnitude with rising ocean temperatures. This map depicts the extent of coral bleaching in October 2023 compared to March 2024 during what scientists have named the Fourth Global Coral Bleaching Event. As coral reefs around the world suffer from this fourth coral bleaching event, how can we best collaborate to mitigate further reef damage and death? What are the most urgent needs to address the health of ocean life? 🌍 Interested in continuing the dialogue and meeting the larger AGS community? On the 80th anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 2024), Christian Lamb, the woman who made the attack’s landing maps, was awarded the French Legion d'honneur by President Macron. The Legion of Honor is the highest decoration in France. Lamb, now 104 years old, was a British naval officer who was stationed in London to create the maps in secret at the start of 1944. Her maps were ultimately vital to the Allies’ attack on June 6th. Prior to World War II, Lamb had intended to go to university, but when the war began, she joined the Wrens, the Women’s Royal Naval Service that worked behind the scenes in non-combat roles. By age 20, Lamb was promoted to “leading wren” and started working on maps for ships involved in the war. Her early assignments involved plotting ship movements using information from radar stations and coast guards. In the months leading up to D-Day, Lamb worked alone in a basement room, using survey maps and photos to ensure crafts landed at the correct positions on the beach. The detailed maps included every possible feature that would be visible to the invaders, including railways, roads, churches, and castles. Lamb’s meticulous work successfully delivered troops to the beaches of Normandy in the largest seaborne invasion in history. #dday #geography #gis #geospatial #maps #mapping #military #WWII

#DailyGeo Feature: Mexico City Reservoir Dries After a longer-than-usual dry season, an important reservoir for Mexico City is now at 28% of its normal capacity. Valle de Bravo, a man-made lagoon in the forests about 85 miles west of Mexico City, has long served as a lake getaway for the wealthy and a vital water source for 20 million city dwellers downstream. The lake's shoreline has receded 18% over the past two years. Rain is the lake's primary source of water, but the Cuenca Amanalco-Valle de Bravo region has seen 25% less rain than the annual average of the past two decades. The city stopped extracting water from the lake in April due to its low water levels. Reduced rain from climate change and the El Niño climate pattern, a population surge, and extensive leaking from faulty infrastructure have all taken a significant toll on the water levels. Experts predict Mexico City's 8.8 million people could run out of drinking water this month, a date referred to as "Day Zero." As cities around the world from Mexico City to Johannesburg to Jakarta face water shortages, how can we best collaborate to address iniquities in water access and prevent health crises? How does water sharpen conflict at various scales - from the neighborhood to the state to international disputes? 🌍 Interested in continuing the dialogue and meeting the larger AGS community?
